Jeu de fou, l'histoire m'a tellement souvent touchée, (Endwalker <3) et chaque fois que je pense au jeu j'ai des myriades de souvenirs plein la tête nan franchement des fois faut juste applaudir

As a longtime player since Heavensward (with a majority of my hours outside of Steam just because playing through the Steam client wasn't always required), this game has gone downhill every expansion. Some aspects have been redeeming each expansion, but the overall experience has declined each and every expansion without fail.

Simply put - the gameplay has grown tired and boring with how heavily it has been stripped down for "balance" reasons.

Mechanics have steadily dropped in interactivity and complexity. Jobs have been distilled down to simplified Dance-Dance-Revolution-like sessions (1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3...unless you're a healer, in which case it's just 1-2, 1-2, 1-2). The writing has grown dull and duller with the developers' aversion to taking risks - you can only fake a death so many times before it's obvious that you won't kill any core characters off, you know? Dungeons went from much more careful encounters leveraging group RPG tactics and crowd control, resource management (HP, MP, & TP), mitigations, buffs & debuffs to...nothing but braindead AOE attack spam. Matchmade groups went from experiences filled with banter, cooperation and deliberation on strategy have evolved to near-silent runs that demand uniform, templated strategies. At this point, if an action or a spell does anything other than straight damage, it's at risk of CBU3 removing it from the game. Improvisation is dead in this game, and this development team are the ones that killed it.

The game has also been steadily growing towards excessive monetization over the years, and I'm not happy with the trends there. Square Enix's cash shop greed has even led to the takedown of major mods for the game with a snarky admonishment from its producer for players daring to affect the studio's revenue (despite how the bigger sink on the game's revenues is how Square Enix redirects them to "smash hits" like Left Alive, Balan Wonderworld, and Babylon's Fall).
Housing has been designed to require you to maintain your monthly subscription - you have to log in and visit your house regularly or risk losing said in-game house because of the deeply unsatisfying limited-availability housing system (yes - want to take 3 months off from the game? LOSE YOUR HOUSE.) From the phone app's microcurrency and additional subscription (so you can adjust prices for the in-game markets which are always overrun with botted listings anyways) to charging for extra retainers for extra inventory space (despite how every expansion adds a slew of new items, most of which are regularly needed for crafting) on top of needing to purchase expansions individually and pay monthly for the subscription, this game will be looking for any way to drain your funds that it can - and if you're thinking that you'll just wait for FFXIV mobile instead, early indications are that *that* will be even more predatory for monetization methods.

This game was good once. It's not worth it anymore. Play something else - something more respectful of your time and funds.

I played the none steam version. As someone who played the original online. You cant use anything I mean anything until you grind the boring story, I mean JRPG boring. Which is 99% go here talk to this person. You cant ride chocobos, cant auction house cant join party's cant unlock most skills until you spend 20 plus hours talking to this person and that person. And the world is linear, lol I know online game with linear areas, not just dungeons. What a piece of crap boring game.

I own all the expansions on SE's online store and have almost 10k hours clocked between 3 characters. I've been playing since Stormblood. The recent playtime has been inflated by a lot of AFK time, but I still play actively ~20 hours a week because it's my main social game. I'm writing this review now after finishing the most recent patch content, which wraps up the expansion story for Dawntrail. (There are still 2 more patches to go but they will be mostly prefacing the next expansion)

The game is genuinely in the worst spot it's been since I started playing. Contrary to popular opinion, I wasn't a big fan of Endwalker, I thought the story played out like a marvel movie: bloated with a bunch of character cameos from the last 10 years where everyone had to show up to give their one-liners. I thought the last zone and all the quests leading up to the final dungeon was genuinely some of the worst game writing I'd ever sat through. All the "sacrifices" were so forced and even then they couldn't commit to anything and literally told you "hey definitely don't use the thing that will undo all these sacrifices haha unless?" and then lo and behold, we used the thing that undid all the sacrifices and with it any value the story had.

I thought it couldn't get worse! I was excited coming into Dawntrail because it gave the impression that we were finally divorcing ourselves from the Scions and thus the over-sized cast of characters we'd been lugging around. It promised a whole new world where we could start a fresh adventure with new characters! I could care less about being the main character or the warrior of light/darkness, I just wanted to have FUN.

Dawntrail is not fun, and that's the biggest issue. The story is glacially paced, with a new main character who makes every scene she's a part of worse. Once I'd gotten to the first dungeon (multiple hours of quests in btw) I realized I'd spent less than 10% of my time actually engaging with the game in any more meaningful way than just running from quest to quest. I have no problem reading, I read books all the time, but generally if I'm going to spend hours reading I'd like the story to be good and this just wasn't. Maybe prior expansions were similarly balanced but I just didn't notice then because the story was engaging. Unfortunately, this pacing continues up until the last two areas, where it FINALLY starts to pick up a little.

Outside of the abysmal story, the other biggest problem is that SE just refuses to try anything new with the game. I heard the game referred to as a "theme park mmo" a few weeks back, and it's an accurate term for it. Almost every dungeon is structured the same: 2 wall-to-wall pulls where dps only have to drool over their aoe rotations for a couple minutes and supports have to fill their (increasingly easy) roles. Then a boss with a bunch of mechanics you've probably already seen before. Rinse and repeat. For the last 5 expansions it's been the same structure: dungeons on all the odd levels, with two trials somewhere in there followed by a capstone dungeon and a final trial after. The patch cycles have been identical, with alliance raids and normal raids coming out on the same schedule every time. Occasionally we'll get unique pieces of content, and some of them are absolutely stellar. The time I spent with friends in Eureka will remain one of my favorite memories in gaming for instance. Unfortunately many of those ships have sailed, and the ones that replaced them in Dawntrail are just worse versions of what came before. The moon crafting stuff? Ishgard paired with the revamped Diadem was so much more engaging because it forced people to go out and collect stuff and sell it to each other; now crafters are just handed all the materials for their quests because I guess it would just be unfair to expect them to either go gather stuff themselves or god forbid interact with the community around them. Occult Crescent? You now get half the zones Eureka had, and at least the first of those two zones that's out right now is barely equivalent to the first of FOUR zones in Eureka.

I waited until the end of the expac to make my final judgement on it, and it's a sad one for me. I love this game, I've made lifelong friends on here and it remains my largest online social space. I just can't recommend the game anymore with the direction the devs have been taking it. It's very clearly just a cash cow where SE will do the bare minimum to keep it alive and sub money flowing in to fund their other games and remasters. The core content up till the most recent expansion is good, pick it up if you want to go through a fairly solid multi-hundred hour jrpg story, but the "critically acclaimed" mmo that everyone wouldn't shut up about is in it's twilight hours, it may be time to look elsewhere for that fix.
