Connection to the Steam api is complicated so I did not integrate it for reasons I already replied on the other thread, but you can easily join your friends through the ingame server browser or connect directly through IP address.

You can try setting all graphics to lowest and if that fails your PC is too old, there are not even operating systems anymore that support such old PCs.
If you do not know what graphic level does what, go to Uebergame folder scriptes/client/defaults.cs the quality groups start at line 246.
You don't have to set all, performance relevant or crash relevant are mostly just the lighting and shader settings.
Changing:
$pref::lightManager = "Advanced Lighting";
To
$pref::lightManager = ""Basic Lighting"";
Should already do the job in config.cs only if that does not work, try other settings.
Or have a friend set the settings you want or to low or potato and then copy over that config file to your folder.
