I'm pretty sure he did die. You got the exp afterwards he goes off screen and you do hear the poof sound.

Even if he did survive the stab he would've died when you destroyed the world

Well, I mean, he has 1 hp, and you can even see you did 99999 damage. There's no reason he wouldn't be.
