Satsuki with The Reunion
So I am having some trouble figuring this out. I want to play FF7 before I play the Remake. I managed to get a PS5 which I am waiting to be shipped, and am going to wait till June for the FF 7 PS5 launch. I own a Switch, Xbox One, and this PC. I am tempted to buy this on my Switch so I can play this in my bed or whatnot, but eh.. Then there's the Xbox version which is apparently free for me right now because of gamepass, but that expires next week so I wont beat it in time. I have zero interest in spending $15 to renew that for this one game.

Most likely I will buy this on my Switch, or the PC. Looking at the PC I see quite a few mods to improve the game so I am leaning towards the PC, but it's a bit overwhelming. There is a mod by Remako I see recommended a bunch, but looking at his blog it seems it's discontinued and he recommends using Satsuki Yatoshi Mod which was updated actually yesterday. It looks amazing. The main reason I never played FF7 is because you couldn't tell the difference from the background and exits and things to do lol. I tried playing this on the PS1, but it was horrible. The Satsuki mod seems to fix that as the backgrounds look amazing, but is it finished? Would I be able to play through the entire game with that mod and finish it? I see no details about that, just what the number of backgrounds and stuff it fixes. Then there is "The Reunion" which I see recommended a bunch as well. The Reunion doesn't look as nice as the Satsuki mod so I am unsure why people still recommend that unless you can play with both mods together somehow?

Sorry about my questions, but I am wanting to give FF7 a proper play through and I am just looking for the best experience. I will probably just get this version because of the mods, but maybe it's better for my first experience to be without them on my Switch? If you would recommend the Steam version then which mod do you recommend?

Thanks!

So after a lot of research, and finally figuring this out. You can only install Reunion with Satsuki V4.5. The newest SYM5 will not work with Reunion, because of the added animations. There is a torrent that includes an easy to install SYM4 with Reunion on the official Reunion discord server. Just in case anyone cares or stumbles across this post in the future.

thank you for your research

NP. I figured I would post a couple of screenshots real quick. It's amazing how good it looks! I remember playing this as a kid, and I could never get past the bad background graphics lol. I ended up begging my parents to get a N64 so I could play Zelda Ocarina of Time back then.

I am actually also using Ninostyle character models. If you install Reunion first, and then the SYM4 torrent(directions in the torrent), and then overwrite the files with Ninostyle character models last it works perfectly fine. On the Discord there is several other mods you can add as well like Vanilla Menu(HD menus), and better fonts.

http://ff7.live/index.html for The Reunion website, and then just click "Discord Channel" to join it.

https://www.nexusmods.com/finalfantasy7/mods/4 - Ninostyle HD models. I downloaded the "Ninostyle Models for Direct folder" and manually put them in the CUSTOM/mod/Direct folder. The download comes with 2 versions, and I use the Chibi models as I feel they are closer to the original art style.

As an example from where I have the game installed : C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FINAL FANTASY VII\The_Reunion\CUSTOM\mod\Direct

I just copy and pasted the version I wanted to that directory after installing the previous 2 mods.

After you install The Reunion, copy files from the torrent for SYM4, and add the HD models if you want. Find the The_Reunion folder after installing if you decide to use the HD models. Edit the "options.ini" in notepad, and find "Mod_ID = NONE" and change "NONE" to "mod(or whatever folder you want to put the HD models in)."

You can get it from The Reunion discord server. It's posted in the "share-mods" category as a torrent.

The remake is nothing like 7, the remake is more made for the kids. The Devs probably thought gee if we make it for everyone then the more sales we might get.
So it might mess up your whole experience. Though the remake is beautiful and Cloud wasn't that bad but everyone else made me cringe in the Dialogues scenes. Exploding with way to much emotion like children. The message idea cooperated in the game was so retarded to. If that hadn't convinced you how childish the game is then the massages will. Cuz yeah nothing like a hand massage oh boy! like anyone would ever pay for a freaky hand massage. That is One of the most ridiculous things i have ever heard or seen. Cuz anything else would of apparently been to damaging for the kids to see.

Glad you figured it all out and were able to enjoy the amazing Satsuki mod. The latest version of it is pretty amazing. Entirely standalone launcher that has so many good features. He did have to update it to use the 1998 PC version .exe because the Steam version could randomly delete save files. Kind of sucks because playing on Steam gives you so many native controller options. But otherwise the mod is incredible.

FF9 also has an incredible AI upscale mod and I believe there are several still in development for FF8 if you're looking to play the rest of the PS1 games

I have been playing FFVII and the whole collection of 1990's RPGs on consoles back when they were released as a kid and have great memories of those times.

I just started a play through of the FFVII (Steam) with only the latest Satsuki mod installed and find is a great way to relive the old game (I am actually using the original low fi 3D models but use HD backgrounds, etc).

For anyone who wants to pick up these old games now without prior experience back in the time, ... be warned, you may not really enjoy them. The 1990s were a different time and if you have not lived them and played thee old games back then you may find them now "cheesy" or "childish".

If you are a die hard FF fan, by all means, go for it and play them (you MUST ignore the (by today's standards) limitations in controls and visual quality - if you cannot ignore this and get hung up on that, don't bother playing them.

I for one am able to look past such limitations and play these games as they were meant to be played back when they were first released and massively enjoy them still today.
My favourites of the "old games relived moments" surely are FFVII and Shenmue.
Looking at FFVII even from today's perspective it becomes very clear what an absolutely amazing game it has been back in '97.

TLDR:
- buy FFVII on Steam and do a clean install
- download the latest SYW mod only (a ton of great upgrades, such as HD backgrounds, CGI sequences, model replacements if you like, menu overhauls, ...)
- play it for an hour and decide if you like it or not

Thank you MaGicBush, dunno how I missed this post, but using SYW4 with Reunion works fine. :OkaySir:
