Thinking about buying Fallout 1 and 2, but worried about the old school difficulty
I am considering buying Fallout 1 and 2. I love games with a great story, i like RPGs with skills and stats. And i don't care about the graphics being old.

BUT. How hard is the game? I'm not from the generation with these old school kind of games, with the old school difficulty i hear so much about. Is the game very punishing? Can i just save when i want?

Is there any cheats/god mode in case i get completely stuck?

I don't personally think it's overly difficult, if you've played turn-based RPGs before you should be fine. Just don't try to apply guns as a problem solving technique to every problem you face. You can save anytime you want, and I encourage you to do so. It'd also be a good idea to check out the manual as the game has no built-in tutorial.

I played it for the first time last year and the manual really helped me to understand the combat and just the UI in general. The manual comes with the game in PDF form and you can find it in the game's folder. And yes, you can save whenever you want.

Does the manual spoil any story stuff?

I have some more questions if you dont mind.

1: Is it easier to be good than evil? Sometimes i like to play the jerk, but not if the game punishes me.

2: Is it ok to focus on speech? I have played some of Fallout 3 and really liked convincing people only using talking.

From what you have written you will enjoy it I'm sure. In Fallout 1 there a time limit for you to get the water purifier chip which is part of the challenge of the game/story. When you've finally done it the next time you will know how to go straight to it. Fallout 2 has a more relaxed approach to enable you to explore in comparison.
Only hard part is learning what skills are useless, learning the SPECIAL checks, and figuring out the controls and interface. All stuff that will become irrelevant with a quick internet search or a few hours of game time.

Just don't save during combat, that tends to corrupt saves sometimes.

Yes as well as playing with a low Int score. Gender sometimes gives new quest options or side activities.

Fallout 1 and 2 can be very hard in the beginning if you encounter stronger enemies. Trust me I worried about this stuff too but you will get used to it. And the game will become more and more enjoyable once you get better gear to counter these threats >< And yes you can save whenever you want even in combat. Some people say this might corrupt the save and it might so be careful. it never happened to me and I save a ton during battle but still be careful.

They most likely meant saving in combat is glitchy, like how in Fallout 1.0 your companions could end up cloned and then cause issues.

To OP, use the Purist version of Fallout Fixt. It's handy and fixes problems that were in FO1 and never fixed in the official patches.

In my personal opinion it isn't too difficult a game. If you walk into an area where you're not supposed to be you'll likely die, but if that happens then just reload and try a different path.

I just started Fallout 2 and it is insanely harder than 1. WTF. What's with the crazy difficulty spike? I have finished every quest in the den (except slavery) and only have a pipe rifle and 300 money...wtf

EDIT: Where do i get money and a proper weapon? I cannot travel anywhere else because every single encounter kills me.

And i'm playing on the easiest difficulty...please. i really want to enjoy this game

Not that it helps you but theft such as successful pickpocketing is an easy way to get decent weapons the npc's don't have that much cash but you can sell some common 10mm weapons for a decent price depending on what your bardering level is at.
