All workers hate me, what did i do wrong?
I just started playing the game and after talking to half the town in Cyseal i wanted to go back to the docks in order to tell the trio of sailors that i found work for them and to look for the mayors staff but when i got there i found that they refuse to talk to me and threaten me when i attempt to communicate. I noticed my reputation with them and all dock workers is -45. I have no idea what i did to make this happen, i didnt steal anything or kill anyone, very vanilla and innocent actions so far. I even put out the fire on the boat when i arrived.

Because of this i am unable to complete the 2 side quests and get enough experience to be of equal level in combat. Any idea how this could have happened and how i can fix it?

Do you have the "Stench" + "Know-it-All" talents?
BOT 1 Jul @ 2:53am
you can give one worker some gold to make him more symphatic towards you.. save before in case you give to much money. + 5 symphatie is enaugh. from minus 45 you would need at this early lvls maybe 80 or 150 gold somethink around that..
save before.
then you would be able to talk free again to him.

i dont understand why they dont talk to you.. maybe a mod you use? or problems when you installed it.check your game files.. make a steam troubleshoot.

i played over 1,300 hours this game. never happend to me that kinda bug. you did propably something you dont remember.

Not enough. Putting out the fire on the ship gives +1 reputation, which translates to +5 Attitude.

NPCs (some or all) refuse to talk to you if their Attitude towards you is too low.

My guess is that you did some property damage. Iirc if you hit a barrel or something that doesn't belong to you with a spell or attack, nearby NPC Attitude towards you plummets instantly.

it could also be that you play an undeath /zombie .. and forgot about it.

This shouldn't be an issue. They will always talk to you, even at -100. The only exception is if they automatically engage you in combat. The only thing I can imagine is you're using your side characters to talk, which NPC won't talk to them. Only the main source hunters.

Even if you cannot communicate with them, you'll only lose 5% exp from not completing talking quest. You can still go out and gain experience normally.

or kill them and gather the exp from their corpses ^^

You can only play human in DOS1
With Larian balancing you could get the exp back due to higher exp from higher level enemies and a better loot drop chance. You could experiment with combos and pick things up like oil barrels+candles to use in combat to add to options.

This is likely.

(To topic poster) Also note that you may not notice when you pick something up that belongs to someone else. I did it once. But it is unlikely and I am just guessing at the moment.

Ultimately I just don't know enough. Though I suggest reading quest logs related to any sailor-related quest, even if the relation is very small.

Okay, i took the advice and gifted the sailor 150 gold. This brought not only his reputation to -35 but also all sailors around so then they finally talked to me and i was able to progress the quest for them and the staff.

Still no idea how it got that low but i didnt know you can buy friendship with money, that helps.

Just going out on a limb here but..."Zombie" Trait doesn't list a negative impact to reputation like Know-it-all and Stench do; so probably not effecting this. Still if I've learned anything, Don't go around touching things, even a misclick out of stealth mode will cause nearby NPCs/Owners Reputations to drop; on that topic though, Stealth mode out of sight causes no reputation damage; but you must steal/use it/read it when it is not in sight/visible to the nearby NPCs (which is nearly impossible if they're in the same room with low stealth)
