I consider Dragon's Dogma to be a heroic party simulator in which you create your own stories and the chatter with the dragon and Arisen in the background is more of a formality.
The plot pulled the game well in a certain direction, but it didn't annoy you too much and didn't distract you from what you will remember the most - spectacular fights, tactics and sometimes even witchcraft preparations for some tough enemies. So it doesn't matter at all that Dark Arisen only has a completely standard mini-story and doesn't attempt any Shakespeare.

There's also a decent jump in difficulty between the original game and the data disc. The spirit of the game is that you can go to Bitterblack Island whenever you want. But if you don't have enough level, you will know it by the corpses of your pawns and your character. After several desperate attempts to "do it now" (tens of hours of grinding), I finally listened to the creator and went to the island at level 52. In my opinion, this is just enough to make the first half of the game a solid challenge, but not frustrating at the same time.
However, I soon learned the weakness of Bitterblack Island. It is a linear dive into dungeons and caves, which brings with it logically closed spaces and narrow corridors that only occasionally disturb the larger hall. On the one hand, it's very atmospheric thanks to the game's great lighting as you wait for something to jump out at you. On the other hand, my Ranger with a ranged specialization found himself needing daggers more than his specialization would indicate.

I was disappointed that a large part of the bestiary consists only of classic monsters from Dragon's Dogma, to which the authors added some additional characteristics, made them bigger, etc. Even so, there are some great new monsters that every forged dragon slayer will be happy to discover, so I won't spoil their fun specific description.

Anyone who doesn't have and hasn't played Dragon's Dogma at all gets the improved original game together with the data disk. It's solid fun and of course quite a challenge. 30%

Perfect game, I wish this game can get a graphic update. IT BETTER THAN PART 2!!!!

Before DD2 came out, I picked this up for 5 dollars. One of the best game i ever played despite the flaws and outdated designs. Bitterblack isle is peak dungeon meshi style dungeon. Still plays it alongside DD2 which has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Better than the sequel if playing with mods. That might change with DLC to the second game though. Also, the story is kinda short if no interest in side quests.

I understand why people like this game and why it has a reputation as "that one game your friend keeps trying to get you to play" but man does it just not respect your time. If you do play it abuse the eternal ferrystone at least, and maybe use a guide?

The best part of the game is the combat, which is great. The classes I played were fighter, warrior, and assassin, and attacks felt really meaty. For example, with swords (the other weapons might do it too but those are what I used, would've eventually played all the classes if I hadn't gotten bored) the devs pulled a cool trick where some attacks actually trigger multiple times while swinging so you can hit an enemy twice with a swipe or even get this shearing cut that hits over five times. Many enemies can be disarmed or have sections of them that can be disabled or cut off, it doesn't happen with everything but when it does happen it is noticeable. This and other design decisions regarding the combat lead to it feeling really great, and with the combat alone it is understandable why people love this game so much.

Unfortunately, this game doesn't respect your time. Those cool fights that really make this game pop as a unique action RPG are held back by design decisions I would expect from terrible MMO developers. Getting to those fights takes what feels like forever because of several factors, a big one being the large open world design.
The open world simultaneously feels too big and too small. Too big because getting to important locations always drags because of how spread out they are. There are fights between locations but its always the same enemies spawning each time, making traveling boring and routine. That is a problem because of what makes the world feel too small, the fact that you are constantly made to go to the same locations over and over again. I don't know how big the open world is but from what I've experienced this game's open world is tiny compared to others doing it, this game seems obsessed with keeping me in the same vertical stretch of land around the starting town and Grand Soren, and it really makes this adventure fall flat when I'm not doing any adventuring.
If the open world does hold adventuring potential they should have had better quest design. I respect the choice of having a home base city that you are traveling to and from to do quests, but its always "travel for 20 minutes over there, do something actually interesting, travel 20 minutes back" (This is why you should abuse the eternal ferrystone) then after you get back you accept another quest and they want you to go back to the place that you were just at, which is maddening. By the way, heaven forbid you accept any escort quests. Such quests have a reputation for being terrible and needlessly difficult and Dragon's Dogma sticks to the stereotype too well. Whoever you are escorting is going to die and you will fail the quest, which cannot be retaken, meaning if you want a second chance you have to reload your last save. I didn't check to see if you could cheese these with the eternal ferrystone but if I ever give this game a second chance I will be doing that because screw those. I've never played an RPG that punished you for taking all sidequests like that before. I guess there isn't a strict penalty? but then again if you make it halfway to your destination and then your vip gets backstabbed by someone because you took your eyes off him for two seconds it will be very frustrating to finish that fight and have your "wow that was fun" attitude crushed by the "QUEST FAILED" notification.
Speaking of failing and getting into things you aren't ready for, this game's leveling system feels really unbalanced to me. At the beginning of the game I got crushed by bandits and grinded out goblins for a minute and then everything was fine. I had hoped that would be the end of strange combat balancing but actually this game kind of just likes to put soft walls up and not tell you about them, you can't even compare enemy levels to yours or anything, so if you do decide to explore somewhere you've never been before there is a good chance that there are enemies there that will very quickly destroy you. I think this would be okay and contribute to the adventurer experience but its done so shoddily here. There is absolutely no way to tell if you are in over your head until you hit a grunt and see no movement on the healthbar, or get hit and find half you health gone. Some way to tell whether I'm going somewhere I'm not supposed to be would be nice, whether diagetic or otherwise (my pawns could tell me that this place is far too dangerous to be or something). Also, while pawns seem not completely stupid in combat (they are still very figety and uncoordinated) fleeing combat is like trying to bait squirrels into following you, spamming "over here!" only does so much when these idiots are completely and absolutely dedicated to fighting something that can one shot them no problem (only exaggerating a little bit here).

Basically in my experience Dragons Dogma is a game on the cusp of being great and incredibly fun, but drops the ball with abysmal quest design and a world that isn't fun to explore and I got bored of it after giving it a long fair shake. Maybe I'll try the second one eventually in the future? I want to play a game with this kind of combat, both fighting the grunts and the huge monsters, but I don't want to play this version of it.

Seems I can't repeat a failed quest, no fast travel, been following a guy for 30 min and he just kept going in circles. I had enough

Good game, took me a few hours to get into it. The negatives are the graphics (everything is just green and stone), and the games smoke is not optimized well (i get 30fps when smoke appears with a 6900xt). Also I hate when the healing spell makes you glow, I cant see anything in front me when it happens.

W game. Has a great place in my soul. Very recommended.

Story is incomprehensible. Just absolute nothing going on there whatsoever. Graphics are also very old and dated, not aged well. BUT it's very fun and has great exploration and combat!
