I'd say play a bit as a Fighter, figure out game mechanics first, and how to handle few early game boss level monsters, with sword and shield. This will be a good practice.
Only with a bit of experience in melee combat think about Warrior.
And skills?
If you are almost rank 9 Warrior these should sound familiar:
https://dragonsdogma.fandom.com/wiki/Exodus_Slash
Escape Slash - the only Warrior skills with I-frames. Upgrades to Exodus Slash, which makes for a great defensive and offensive move as it adds subsequent attacks to evasive one (spam attack button after evasion). Use this one just before the enemy blow reaches your character to nullify damage.
https://dragonsdogma.fandom.com/wiki/Indomitable_Lash
Savage Lash - your starting skill. You charge the powerful strike, the more powerful the better timed its release (release it at the very moment it's fully charged for max damage). Upgrades to Indomitable Lash which adds second charging tier.
https://dragonsdogma.fandom.com/wiki/Whirlwind_Slash
Upward Strike - basically an uppercut with a weapon that launches lesser enemies into the air. Upgrading this one to Whilrwind Slash allows you to perform full 180 degree front to back swing and hit also enemies behind your character.
alternatively
Spark slash - upgrades to Corona Slash. A circular slash that hits really low but everything around you should get damaged. Not too good against bosses as their legs are usually armored.
These are the ones I use (plus naturally core skills). There are also gimmicks like Savage Lunge (a forward charge move), Arc of Might (more straighforward and potent Lash but veeeery slow charging) or Pommel Bash (quick, spammable hit with the weapon's butt end). Feel free to experiment with these if you won't like my picks.
