How to use ballistas ?

I'm at the final boss and I can't seem to use them. It says to press LMB or RMB for Regular/Explosive but it just switches between them, not actually fire anything. 'E' is for unmounting.

I pretty much tried every key on my keyboard but nothing fires. In the mean time my troll pawns are randomly shooting the battlefield.

I'd appreciate some help so I can get to post game.

For anyone who might be new to ballistas: Never ever use the explosive ones if anything can attack you on your ballista. I don't know the exact times but reloading a exploding bolt uses about 15 secs or so ,while a normal one only needs ~4s(?). The difference in damage is not worth the long reloading time.
