This is something that is a carry over from the old game Pirates. You can beat off ships much stronger than you if you move in and out of range. When you get in battles with the slavers at the start, use the control key to speed up the ship when you are fired upon or need to get out of range. As soon as the enemy gets in range, fire and then move out.
