Steam version of Blender unable to use HIP on Linux AMDGPU
I've got an interesting problem here. I've installed the Steam version of Blender and it fails to recognise my 6700XT. For testing I installed blender from AUR and that version both recognises and utilises my GPU. Software preferences are carried over on both versions.

Initially I thought that maybe Blender was running under a proton compatibility layer but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Both rocm-hip-runtime and hip-runtime-amd are installed.

Specs:
OS: Garuda Linux x86_64
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT

Honestly it's not particularly problematic as I can just use the AUR version but I'd still like to figure out why it's doing this.

AUR? Not Blender.Org? In any case, you have your solution. That said. The Steam version is just the same as the equivalent from the Blender website, except that it launches from Steam. If you just make a shortcut directly to the exe in your steam folder, & run from that, you can bypass Steam and leave it closed.

AUR. Arch User Repository. It's used for installing user-generated packages on Arch Linux. I understand that the Steam version is identical to the version on blender.org. The AUR version is identical too and runs perfectly fine.

My issue is that the version launched from Steam doesn't detect the hip-runtime and thus is unable to utilise GPU Compute.

Additionally, I don't want to bypass Steam. I actually want to record my hours. It's trivial but I do like seeing how much time I've put in.

Regardless. Thanks for trying to help.

Use another method to count your hours. The steam counter doesn't really work well. There are addons available....

had the same problem and found out that its a known thing (https://developer.blender.org/docs/handbook/release_process/stores/steam/#known-issues)
force legacy runtime as compatibility option in steam options for blender (where you would normally change proton versions for windows games)

Yeah, I just saw the post about it as well. Changed it and now my GPU is properly detected. Thanks.
