Rhythm or Reaction game?

I'm trying to play the first song and I think I'm missing something. Don't think it was actually communicated in game.

When I try to tap the box at the end just before it changesI almost always just get bad ratings, as if I'm missing the correct timing. Once in a while I'll get a perfect hit. Often times I'll just miss it entirely.

Otherwise I can get 'good' by hitting a corner as soon as it changes on the beat, but it's never perfect.

What am I exactly trying to hit on the beat? Am I supposed to hit the box the moment it appears? Is this actually a reaction game?

Try training mode and you will probably figure it out quickly!

If you just want to know the answer:
The small square indicates where the big square is going to be next, get best precision by hitting the button just when the big square appears.

Thanks! Just completed the first stage, and from F to C rank. I love how the game tries its hardest to throw you off once you get a higher streak but now I'm having more difficulty without the low-streak animations.
