Whenever I import a tileset/chipset, it say that "The image is not 256 colors." I made sure it had an 8 bit pixel depth and that the file was in BMP format. What's the problem?

I'm trying to do it so the battle sprites are just faces, and they stay in a really specific place, but when I get into a battle they just end up moving to the left. Does anybody know how to fix this?

I know the maker only accepts 256 colour but my problem is when I import this way, the images lose their colour data. Hard to describe but the whole thing goes from looking like SNES quality to NES quality. I am only using pixel graphics and I know it can be achieved that you can get nice crisp colours in 2k3 but whenever I import mine the whole thing looks like it's been hit with a vat of bleach and the colours look totally washed out and awful.
