Whats wrong with my controls.

so the controller was working fine up until now.
for whatever reason, my A button is now X and vice versa, my start and select buttons are now triggers, and my joysticks are now start and select. for the record, I'm using a basic xbox one controller, and this game is the only one doing this.

So just to be clear, it worked fine with this game before, and now it doesn't? Or was it just on other games?

I'd try fiddling with Steam's controller settings. Could be that something got changed there inadvertently.

Worked perfectly just two nights ago while I was grinding at Mushroom Rock Road. tried messing with steams controller settings and nothing works. every other game works fine. A is read as an A, X is X, etc. This applies to my other steam account. every other game reads my controller correctly but this one all of the sudden.
