The Type 8 is a great hauler, as it's reasonably maneuverable.
The Mk 2 is a great fighter, it sucks at anything else.
The Mandalay should be out sometime early next year and it's a 15Mcr purchase and is a great, wonderful ship. It is an explorer, with incredibly long legs.
The Mark 5 is an amazing Cobra. It's about 2Mcr, and is a wonderful general purpose ship.
They are quite fun to fly around. with the exception of the type 8, they seem to be multi role, the type 8 really seems best suited as a hauler. however im sure someone will soon be one to argue that
You can eng and refit to your liking. they just make them better.
- New ships are initially released for arx. If you have Odyssey, a few months later they become available for credits There are also preengineered prebuilds on sale for arx, like a titan bomber python/krait2/whatever it was. I think they are around the 40-60 millions credits.
- A few months ago, new frameshift drives with boost were released and changed everything. The new ships are developed with them in mind and are much more efficient in terms of fuel consumption and flight stability during supercruise boost compared to the old ones.
- Python MKII is alledgedly great at combat and I remember people saying it could dethrone the fdl as the new meta, but I never looked deeper into it. Type-8 transporter can carry a lot of cargo being only a medium sized ship, maybe the most on its category. Mandalay has the best jump range and I think it just dethroned the jumpaconda in the single jump distance category. Cobra MKV is multirole.
In short the Python MII and the Type 8 transporter are available now for credits.
2. personal taste, but i like them
3.
the python mark II is a combat ship
the type 8 transporter a cargo/mining ship
the mandalay is an explorer ship
the cobra mark V is a Multipurpose ship
EDIT: i have a DBX and an imperial eagle, as well as 11M in the bank. looks like this will be a painite in the asp. ah well, new goals means fun times
the type 8 is also extremely manoeuverable and feels great for a hauler, especially compared to his little type 7 brother, but unless you're starting a new save or you're a new player (which you aren't), well, why would you go for it?
it can't compare to the type 9 as a hauler (obviously), it can't fight, and worse yet, it can't mine; and this is the worse part for me because due to how nimble it felt, I was like 'oh hell yeah, I can finally get rid of the python and use this baby to go core mining' and even tho on paper it should be a fantastic miner, the way it deploys drones completely killed it; on a python for example you can launch your prospector limpet at basically any speed, meaning you can just fly around like a maniac and boost and pulse and prospect away, making things very quick
but this thing instantly destroys any limpets you let out if you're flying above 100ms, meaning you have to slow to a crawl every time you want to prospect anything making it ♥♥♥♥ at it
Make sure you have Odyssey if you want to do exobiology. The new ships are also only available for credits in Odyssey, as far as I know. So if you don't have it, you'll definitely want to pick it up (I think it's on sale atm).
Hold the up-thruster button as you fire off the limpet. I used to do the same on the Clipper.
And Odyssey is on sale on Steam right now for a pittance.
Since Live and Odyssey use the same game engine, the only reason I can see for not buying Ody these days is some stubborn life-long desire to 'punish' fdev for past transgressions by withholding about 8-10 bucks from them. (Minus Steam's cut.)
