Engineering has been made easier, so you only missed out on long tedious grinds. you missed out on the titans, but the stuff they influenced is still in game.
The only one to catch up with is yourself. you set your own pace. just set goals and work towards them. bigger better ships, fleet carrier etc

You are not "far behind" you just have more content in front of you to explore and decide if you want to go for it, I am going through the ranks of Imperials then going through the ranks of the feds, while in between racking up money to get a carrier and they're going to add more things in the year.
So whats the status on the titans? seems like i can dive in and not worry too much except for this?
The Titans are a collection of bits and pieces right now. You can visit, scrape some materials, dodge pirates and even run into interceptors there.
but they are inactive ships youre saying?
I believe you can still find smaller alien ships to fight, but the big mothership battles are (at the moment) unavailable until they decide to try again.
