Data scanning a settlement
I have taken a mission to scan data from a settlement. Mission said it was some faulty equipment but it was a no fire zone and I accidentally fired. Now I have everyone hostile to me. I dont know if it was because I fired or not. Or whether the client was just lying about it being their settlement and I am doing something illegal.

Anyway I have to get in to scan the data. I know you can do this in a car by getting close to the data mast thing.

But can I also do this on foot? I assume this would be easier sneaking in? But can I do that and how? And what icon am I looking for - I see power, ammo, and a terminal looking icon?

Edit: just read you can't do it on foot. Needs to be done in a ship or a vehicle. That's stupid.

Also, if they attack you for firing accidentally and the mission doesn't fail, just leave the planet and go back and they should forget you.

Then try again.

Edit: Just be aware of weapons they might have that could potentially critically hurt your ship. I've not had this happen yet, but I do see those Anti-Ship turrets, so I'm guessing if I'm within their proximity when they are pissed off, I'll probably get shot by those things. Therefore, if you do a mission that risks ticking off the settlement, land your ship a bit further away so that you can flee to it and take off without much trouble.

You're doing Horizons content which has been in the game for about 8 years now, long before the on foot expansion.

So it's not stupid, it's just a misunderstanding.

In every* case, missions you take from the ship mission board are carried out with a ship or SRV, and missions you take from the on foot mission board are carried out on foot.

*Thargoid settlement reactivations excepted.
I tend to do these from the ship. Often the thing you need to scan is in a sealed off area which you have to open or otherwise tricky to get to in the SRV. From the ship you just need to get really close (practically touching), but once you get the hang of it, finding and targetting it then scanning it becomes fairly easy. Best done in a ship with plenty of shields and fairly fast though, as you will time out the security warning and the base will open fire on you before you can scan it and get out.

Hmm that doesn't sound much fun, I was hoping I might have to sneak in and out on foot. I don't think I will be taking this sort of mission again then. I don't know why Frontier keep missing the mark on these things - there are plenty of ways to make these missions fun and they just aren't seeing them for some reason.

Well, its just easier (in my opinion). I've done enough of those missions in the SRV and had my fun doing it, so at this point, just want what is quicker.

On foot could add a new interesting variant. They'd just need to make it so that you have a data link scanner on your suit. Problem is, all those bases are Horizons bases, not Odyssey bases, so to counter an on-foot infiltration they would need to make them more like Odyssey settlements, with NPC guards walking around.... but then they wouldn't work for Horizons only owners, unless they made them work differently between Horizons and Odyssey and... well, you can see this would be a headache for the devs.

Oh yes I can see how they need to make the game open to those without the dlc. They need to make Odyssey part of the game now really and then they can change the settlement missions so they can be done on foot would be much more fun.

And its too confusing having separate mission parameters for ship/vehicle/foot dependant on where you choose the mission from. All the missions should be open to being chosen from onboard the ship and from inside the stations. Although that would make going into the stations only useful for getting equipment. And even then personnel equipment should be purchasable via the ship GUI as well. That would leave going into stations just a way of meeting people personally as an option.

You can scan from your ship at 100m. It's not hard to get in, scan, and get out before the alarms go and lasers fly.

I regularly have to do these scans for Assassinations. Were I required to get on foot to do it, I'd stop doing Assassinations. It'd be a good option for the playerbase though.

That's why i prefer to do the wing assassination missions rather than the non-wing ones, no scan required, direct to target. They are harder though (obviously), often a heavily engineered elite FdL which can absorb a ton of damage with a wing of 3 or 4. My double-shot frag Krait usually handles them well though.

Actually lol I was on completely the wrong planet. When I went to the right planet the mission was dead easy. I now know the mission objective is in blue. You live and learn. :steamhappy:
