SO lost
I'm new and trying to grind some $$ or rep in the starting system. All of the available missions on the mission board are too far for me to complete in the starter ship and all of the surrounding systems with a population are seemingly too far away to jump too. What am I supposed to do? The only available mission within my jump range is a source and deliver mission and I have no idea where to acquire said resource. Halp?

What system are you in? It would be unusual for there to be no missions available in-system.

Could it be possible that you misread the distances of some of the missions? The distances for in-system missions are generally given in LS. You might want to check the boards again, and look for missions that are in the same system as yours.

Source and deliver missions are probably not the best thing to start out with as it requires you to hunt down the items.

If you're in the starter system, bear in mind you can't return again - so it's best not to take any missions there. Jump to a nearby system to start your career (and replace the E-rated FSD on your ship with a D-rated of the same size as soon as you can afford it)

You can remove modules (ie: that pulse laser / missle launcher / even a cargo bay) to lighten your ship. Then you could look for any Courier / Data Courier missions. No cargo space required to fly someone's data to another station or port.

The more missions you complete, on time, with a faction of course raises their trust in you. Then you'll have larger payout missions and so on.

Here's a link to another steam post which I list a host of information / sites. Maybe you might find it helpful.

I am one of the few people who will tell you that you should learn the basics of elite first. Then if you care to go find the newest money making strategy..

Some prefer mining, some prefer combat, some prefer trading, some prefer exploration.

The fastest money maker you can currently do is probably going to be exobiology. Look up a basic guide on how to fit a ship for that and start. To put it into context. You can make around 1 billion isk in a day pretty easy with a sidewinder and some basic modules. any new player can make enough to buy whatever the hell they want in a very short peroid of time with exobiology.

Again, my vote is to try everything, You are not stuck in that system and literally can make enough money for a basic mining ship by scooping random popping unidentified signal source loot and selling it.

Jump range is for a single jump, you can chain a group of jumps togeather to get almost anywhere.

Also, a fuel scoop will get you fuel from stars of the types K G B F O A M.

you can see what type of star you are by to in the display and on the map, watch your fuel levels.

Welcome to Elite.

If you want to do some combat, here's what I reccomend. Go into a LowRes in a System with security and *do not* start any fights. Instead keep close to the masses of ships amd keep an eye out for security to fire on criminals.
It happens often. Then follow the fight and tag the criminal woth a shot here and there. You won't get shot at, and you'll still bag the bounties.

This will safely help you get used to basic combat piloting while earning enough credits to get out of the Sidewinder. o7

Im new also. There appear to be several ways to gain some cash but most will take time and effort. Im also hoping to find others to do so with. Let me know if we can link up together as new players.

As i believe some others are also saying, have you set up the ship to max efficiency? economy mode?, it actually means more jumps are required but paradoxically you can travel further distance for the same amount of fuel, and it's a considerable difference this may well help you reach missions further away if you so choose. and or you could extend it's fuel capacity with fuel tanks..but perhaps what might well be most useful it to watch a few decent videos on navigation.. for instance understanding what locations are within ship's range before you even set off, etc

A peaceful way to earn credits ... by the millions is Exobiology.

1. you would enter a system , "Honk" / ping the planets (I have the key bound on my HOTAS but thats what it's called "Honk"), then you have an idea of all the signals and planetary bodies.

2. you then bring up the system map. I have it bound to "." so yours will vary. Click on each planet will result in data on the right side of your screen. The second or third choice down will list the number of settlements , geological , or biological sources/types on the planet if any. could be none.

3. you fly to a planet with biological signals and fire probes at the planet once your within range. I believe it's under 25 million kilometers. Once you discover the entire planet. It'll show a counter starting at 0% and finishing at 100% of course.

4. In the top center of the screen you can rotate through the biological or geological forms exactly discovered. ie: bacteria. You'll have a blue "heat" map with darker blue areas. That's where your subjects of study might ... might be.

5. once you land on the planet you'll want to bring up your biology scanner. it's key "5" for me. A right mouse sends out a signal pulse. If you hear a ping it found something. Bacteria is the hardest to really find the other biological forms are like trees and grasses (in short you'll know they're there as you can see them).

6. Get near your subject of "interest" lol ... once your near the center of your screen will display a circle of sorts and left mouse button collects a sample. You'll need 3 different samples of each biological form to have a completed sample you can submit. Stations, not outposts, will have the gene company usually on the upper floor on the right near the starship representative.

Back to #5 ...

a Green high lighted biologic means = it can be scanned. It's the same type but the gene sequence is varied enough. After 3 collections you have one complete to submit to who I mentioned in #6.

a Blue high lighted color means = it's the same biologic but it's gene sequence it too close to your 1st or 2nd sample. You'll have to travel out further to find the same plant just with a different gene makeup. ie: I find most within a travel radius of 1.5 km. I land my ship , take out my SRV , scan my first sample that I landed at then travel around. get out , ping (right mouse button) , get my next scan or move on if it's still blue. ( ** if you go to camera - position your camera above your SRV ... up high - with most of the viewable landscape before you - you can drive around and spot bacteria alot easier this way too - get some practice in then just remember this tip ** )

the last color you'll experience is this purple color. That is a biologic that you CAN scan but you'll end up scrapping the sample/samples you've already taken. At least you know what it looks like and where to come back to once your finished with your current collection.

You'll want to watch a couple videos on exobiology. Namely performing the "Honk" , closing in on a planet to launch probes to scan that planet. How to use the DSS also. You can Honk then use the DSS scanner to identify everything from the signal sources to planets and what's on them. ie: settlements/bios/geologic . all the break down information will be on right side of that screen too.

Last week I made 39 million turning in 11 completed biological scans and two nights later another 36 million turning in 8 completed bio scans. That was from just two systems. The first system had 13 biologicals but some times you just can't find them. ie: once again ... bacteria ... can hide beneath the landscape I've read.

Sounds like a PITA but once you get use to Honking, using the DSS, identifying whats on a planet. The planet does have biologicals or geologicals (you might be needing Sulfur and the information on the right side will state if it's even there with the %). Learning that it's easier to spot Bacteria flying above the surface between 300 - 500 meters ... they "pop" out.

Follow my link above as it answered a question like this months ago. I list some youtube channels and databases that you'll want to use.

Let´s be honest, you didn´t have to go very far to find a way to earn credits.

Unfortunately, you are coming just in time to miss a massive amount of content. Thargoid war has just ended after a 7 day CG, so you'll be missing out on that entire side of content. Otherwise, good luck 07

There are hints that all is not as it seems with the 'end' of the war.

The New Jersey drone sightings could very well be one of those hints.

I hear the locals are shooting at commercial airliners, clouds and planets now.
