Gryphon Knight Epic

Gryphon Knight Epic

StockMonkey 3 Aug, 2018 @ 10:20pm
I earned the Platinum on the PS4 earlier today, really enjoyed the game!
I first heard about Gryphon Knight Epic when StrictlyLimitedGames announced that they were doing a 1,000 print physical limited edition of it for the PS4. I was lucky enough to order a copy before they sold out (they were sold out in less than 5 minutes!). You may remember that I asked if the game ran at 60fps on the PS4 Pro back in December.

Anyway, I was looking through my backlog (it's huge!) and decided to finally try out Gryphon Knight Epic and quickly became addicted to the game. It's like if Forgotten Worlds (anyone remember that game?), Metal Slug and Mega Man all got together and had a baby lol.

I really love the hand-drawn sprites and backgrounds. There's another topic about the pirate stage that someone posted about but it's definitely my favorite looking stage, I just love those shades of blue and the bright blue sky with the clouds in the background, just beautiful. Also love how you can slightly see the bottoms of the pirate ships and rocks submerged under the water a bit to add extra detail, just fantastic.

Also love a lot of other little details put into the stages like Mega Man's fossilized helmet, ROY G BIV being the secret potion color order to open the portal to a secret rune in the wizard's tower, what i think is supposed to be an Altered Beast Stage 2 wall of eyeballs boss reference in the first half of the Wizard's stage (yes? no? i dunno lol), the huge compendium with tons and tons of lore for everything in the game, all of the stage secrets and everything else.

I was wondering why there was an 8th weapon slot and a ?????? in the compendium for a weapon i didn't have despite beating the game, then being happily surprised when I was rewarded Evil Oliver's Spectral Crossbuster after beating the Magical Stone Dragon on Epic difficulty.

Gryphon Knight Epic has a lot of funny moments in it too. I love how the duck squire is there for no reason at all other than for an achievement/trophy to make him be quiet and how the one old pirate goes stumbling backwards when he fires the spreadshot musket lol.

Also, the mid-boss fights are GREAT! The bosses are always huge and really unique to one another and every sub-weapon (except the sword, that weapon sucks) can be really useful.

One question I must ask? Is the Frogmoth dialogue supposed to actually be secret words, or is it just totally random letters put together?

Also, I earned the Platinum about 12 hours ago, got the Purist (beat entire game using crossbuster only, i'm so glad that i can use the charge shot because i wasn't sure that would disqualify me from the trophy or not) and also got the Gryphon Speed trophy during the same run (my playtime was 1:35, under the 2 hours i needed, thank goodness i could use the 5 green potions i had).

Hello StockMonkey, Thanks a LOT for this, it's fantastic how you noticed a lot of details! I have to tell you that reading this, gave me the goosebumps, this is what makes making games worthwhile :) at least for us here in Cyber Rhino.

Congrats on the paltinum thropie! We know it's hard work to get it :)

PS: Funny thing... the Sword is my favorite weapon =). Once you get used with the slight delay it's the most damaging weapon in the game.

PS2: You were the first one to ask this...and yes.. the Frogmoth dialog has a hidden message on it. I'd love if you try (and manage) to break it :)

Cheers! and again... THANKS! You made the team's day here!

Hi Sandrinus, first of all thank you so much for making Gryphon Knight Epic, this game is so much fun and really deserves more attention in the indie community!

I haven't yet tried deciphering the Frogmoth dialogue yet, the past week I've been so busy with work and finally getting around to playing The Swapper (played through it 3 separate times lol) that I haven't done anything else as far as gaming goes.

BUT, this week I fully intend to figure out just what the heck it is that that giant freak frog is saying lol. Again too, the first area bosses of each stage are fantastic, I was blown away by just the sheer size of the djinn the first time I saw him and it took me a little while to figure out that I had to hit and deflect his fireballs back at him....crossbuster charge shot ftw!

Also, I'll have to try giving the fully upgraded sword another chance the next time I play through the game. I don't like that it won't go through walls/barriers at all but it seems like a great weapon for certain parts of the game like taking out the elephant riders, that boss always gives me trouble. Also speaking of the elephant boss, I love how one of the knights who helps you out on that stage will run up to the elephant as it's about to charge and stagger it back with his magic lance, the game just has so many neat little things like that in it!

And a really funny story, but I actually unlocked the "That's what squires are for!" trophy during the elephant battle, and I didn't realize until I was looking through my trophies that I actually earned it for getting hit and my shield squire replenished my magic shield barrier enough times to unlock the trophy. I thought when I first unlocked the trophy that it was because of the knight who i just mentioned above knocking the elephant back when it was about to charge forward, what are the odds of the trophy popping up right then just to fool me lol.

It took a few years but I FINALLY solved Frogmoth's hidden messages!

I was organizing my PS4 collection earlier today (i still have my SLG copy) and decided to look at Frogmoth's nonsense again to see if I could figure it out. Funnily enough I figured out how to decipher it right away lol. I'm not sure if i should actually post what is being said but two of the letters are incorrect (for the English translation).

Poor Frogmoth just wanted a snack and was sad that he got yelled at by that mean brute Sir Oliver lol, just to give a general summary of the decoded messages lol.

Also, regarding the Definitive Edition on PS4, I hope you guys at Cyber Rhino Studios and Strictly Limited Games can make another PS4 physical of the game happen! Both the original PS4 version and the Definitive Edition Switch versions sold out super fast. I think a PS4 Definitive Edition version would also sell out super fast. The scalpers on ebay who sell the original PS4 version for $400 would cry about it and it'd be beautiful lol.

Man... it warms my heart that someone finally cracked the code :D. It just shows us all the love you have for the game :D You rock!

Feel free to post it if you want... or not if you don't want either... you are the keeper of the code as far as we are concerned now! You earned it :)

Regarding the Def Edition for PS4... we made it available for SLG, so now it's up to them to release it or not. But, I'd definitevly love to see the game reaching more players! Who know what the future holds... :D

I streamed from my PS4 the cutscene (normally I wouldn't get hit so much but i was super rusty and couldn't remember what buttons did what lol). It was the Ibibib part that I was looking at and a light bulb turned on in my head and made me figure out how to decipher everything. Two of the letters are off but it still makes sense lol.

Also, right before I defeated Frogmoth he hit me with his tongue and swallowed me! I totally forgot that he did that, I just thought his tongue would damage me and that'd be it. I love the amount of detail and humor and everything that you guys put into the game!

Sir Oliver's first phrase after Frogmoth eats the Royal Wizard: "By the King's beard! Give back the royal wizard, you hideous monster!"

Frogmoth: "Monster? Why are you cursing at me? I just had (hae) a little snack! Hahaha!"

Oliver's 2nd phrase: "What? I won't pretend I understand you! Just give back the raven, or else..."

2nd phrase: "Typical of brutes like yourself. No (Lo) talk all fight!"

Oliver: Ok, you asked for it. Prepare for a fight!
