I exit the game but it still keeps running even after me ending steam and restarting my computer. Suggestions?

After launching the game, playing for a few minutes, your status on your friends list will change to Typer Shark, etc. When quitting the game, the status will NOT change back. Suddenly the game can not read profile and always shows the message "There was an error reading from the registry" and then always asks for new user name. All progress is gone. Has anybody met the same error recently (on Windows 8.1 Pro)?
