Alpha Protocol

Alpha Protocol

Can't get Alpha Protocol (Steam version) to work on my computer.
I've been trying to get Alpha Protocol running for two days by trying a bunch of different fixes and it always freezes with no error message.

It's obviously a product of its time and is heavily dependent on the version of windows which was in widespread use at the time which I think may have been XP. And the gameis also heavily dependent on specific versions of programs such as Visual C++ redistributable, Physx and directx which were being used at the time. The point at which the game would freeze varied from a few seconds after the game executable launched (during startup videos) to 3 minutes in, at the most.

I tried a number of fixes which I found on discussion pages, such as ..
- Using the patched v1.1 executable. (eur version worked, na wouldn't even run).
- Putting a different version of a Physx file into the binaries folder.
- I tried copying OpenAL32.dll and wrap_oal.dll from windows/system32 into the binaries folder.
- I tried installing multiple different version of Visual C++ Redistributable, different versions of Physx and I tried installing directx9.
- Tried lowering the resolution from 4k to 1080p
- Tried lowering the mouse rate from 1000 to 500 and 250dpi.
- Tried running with and without the launcher.
- I tried all the available windows compatibility modes for both the game executable and the launcher.
- I tried the "Disable full screen optimizations' option for both the launcher and games executable.
- I tried running in full screen and windowed mode.
- I deleted all the local game files and had steam download them all fresh again.

At most the game would run for a few minutes. I did multiple runs on the same compatibility mode and the game would freeze at different times so it's I have no idea what is causing the issue.

This game seems like a broken pile of garbage that has a considerable chance of just not working on your computer so I would recommend to people DON'T buy this game from steam, look into the GoG version. Steam should not be allowed to sell this game.

I'm running windows 10 on an i7 9700 and a 3080. If anyone has any more tricks I can try I would love to hear about it.

Better yet, since this is an issue that comes up from time to time with older games for many people, I would like any advice on how to get information from the game or from my windows on what is happening at the time of the crash. Some sort of event log, or debugging util' or whatever I could possibly use to zero-in on what the cause of the problem is.
