I dont even hate fixed camera angles, but damn does this game just do them horribly

Even though it was one of the most praised for its graphics at the time of its release, the mechanics are exactly the same as the other games, but this one in particular has simply bad enemy design. The puzzles were keeping me interested and the story as always is nothing surprising.

Even though I forced myself to play this game over and over again on three different platforms, it is simply the weakest point of the series. From the beginning, the game doesn't seem to be very accurate in terms of aiming, the classic camera angles are good, but they don't help you aim at all. A great mechanic that was very poorly applied here. Even saving the game constantly didn't help me much in the most frustrating parts of the game.

I understand that every game has its challenging side, otherwise it would be too boring. Especially for a survival horror. But after going through several parts of ~intense~ combat I realized that the resources in the game were very poorly distributed, the simple fact of not having a chest to store your things left me discouraged.

When you change maps/chapters, many of the things come with you but common items are sometimes left behind. If you are playing the game for the first time, I warn you that you will miss a lot of items.

Even playing on an SSD, the menus are long, precisely because you go to the game's home screen when you die. RE1 Remake has the same mechanics but is a MUCH superior product than this one. I stopped playing after dying about 25 times to the same boss, which flies around the room and drops minions to interrupt you. I found it horrible and very frustrating. There's no way to aim properly, in my case I had one character in caution status and another in danger. With neither of them it was a fair fight and once again the camera angles may even be good in some scenes, but in this specific one of the church with the boss it is simply horrible.

I would even give it another chance if it weren't my third attempt. I really tried to like this game but it's just not for me.

It probably won't please anyone who enjoys everything from the classics RE to the modern.

only play if you like resident evil this game is so...... special

The inventory and buddy system really doesn't work and only gets in the way of the game. Furthermore the story doesn't gel up with Resident Evil 1 as well at it could. Although I wouldn't say it's a horrible game, I would certainly rank this last in the mainline series.

Gahd, this game made me so frustrated so many times!!! But also helped me realise that I'm not an as good of a gamer as I originally thought. At one point in normal mode I just wasn't able to defeat the leech-humanoid things and had to switch to easy mode (that meant replaying the game till halfway through the mansion...). But overall, great introduction to the Resident Evil franchise, gotta take a break and then start on RE 1.

This piece of nostalgia is still good as a relaxing couch game played with a controller, but faced some very strange design choices of which not all could be fixed by the mod community like i.e. a missing item box in save rooms. It is however still worth playing in 2024, if you enjoyed the series in the 00s. 7/10

First game in the series for me, I would recommend you use a guide. I got a B Rank which lands at 5:00-7:00HRs in-game time to complete. I used a guide just to get the story. There are puzzles that do NOT have obvious answers. Given the emphasis on resource management, I would say save to multiple slots in case you get an unfavorable save state. Overll I HIGHLY recommend this for 1 play through, and will personally be looking into NewGame+.
