Yes, it is true. However direct link works and you can install the game even without having it previously.

the community doesn't own the rights to strife, some in the community just have an unofficial custodianship with the blessing from the owner

what we CAN do is spread the word of the game far and wide on all the discord servers, all the reddits, all the irc channels, all the facesbook, all the instergorms, the tektaks and tell all your friends
