If you play it without playing the first game, you will probably get quite confused about who the characters are and what their relationships are; the game assumes you played the first game and doesn’t explain things you are supposed to know from it (unless they are explained in-story).

I definitely advise you to play the first game first: not only it will explain things you need to know for the second game, but it is also an excellent story in its own right. Even if you don’t like time-management mechanics of the first game, you can play it for the story And you don’t need to win the game as a whole to follow individual characters’ stories to the end.
