Should I play this game if I'm not familiar with the Borderlands universe?
Or do I need to play the other Borderlands games first?

I too have not played the other games, don't need to either and its still really fun!

Playing the other games is a mission and the style I don't think appeals to me (looter shooter; art style)

You can do a quick search for Hyperion, Handsome Jack, Pandora, Atlas and ofc you can find the story of the series before TFB on yt.

no. this is just an interactive novel anyway, so you do not play this at all.

It's a standalone story so there's no prior knowledge of the universe needed
