Where did Rhys and Fiona go after the ending I'm so confused?

The pre sequel is set before tales from the borderlands.

I don't recall anything about fate of Fiona or Rhys when they opened the vault chest.
Being in that DLC.

Only in BL3 that Rhys returned from whatever happened to him in the vault and rebuilt Atlas.
Nothing before that and nothing about Fiona.
