As the game progresses, new NPCs will join your enclave. As soon as you build a strong association with each new NPC, you get the ability to switch to them and back.
You switch by being close by and talking to them and asking them to take lead.
As the Story continues, you get tired or hurt or killed you will be switched to a new MC or you can rest the MC by playing another. Also, you can lose trust and this ability or have an NPC/friend leave the enclave (or die) while you are not playing them (or offline) as time does not stop when you log out of the game.
