Update 1.8.1

Hello, everyone!

It's been a while since the last update, but I’ve been taking things slow as I haven’t been feeling up to the challenge, even with the limited scope. Considering I don’t really have a set update schedule, I think you’re probably used to these random update times by now. (｡･∀･)ﾉﾞ

New Collection Menu

Let’s start off with a new collection menu:

As you can see, it has received a similar treatment to the achievement menu from the previous update. You can filter each section and combine elements or weapon types however you like. But that’s not all!

Clicking on an item now opens a new window with detailed information:

This brings us to the new feature: item banning!

Item Bans

With the growing number of weapons and items available in the game, things might start to feel cluttered. To address this (and as per user request), there is now an option to ban items from appearing in the game.

To ban an item, simply open its details and click the Ban Item button.

Enemy List

The collection menu now also displays enemies you’ve defeated at least once:

You can view their details, including their resistances and the number of times you’ve killed them. Please note that I’ve just started tracking these numbers, so they will initially show zero kills for all enemies. Sorry! (；′⌒`)

Relics

I asked on Discord, and you all seemed fond of the idea of updating the graphics for runes to make them less simplistic. While simple icons are nice, they don’t scale well for other uses.

So now, the runes have been renamed to Relics, complete with a new look:

They function the same as before—this is purely a naming and graphical update.

Relics Synthesizer

As requested by one of you, players can now merge relics of the same type and rarity to create more powerful relics:

You’ll need 4 duplicate relics to create one of a higher rarity. The roll value of the new relic will be an average of the roll values of the input relics. A small fee, based on the relic’s rarity, will be required for this process.

You can access the synthesizer via the small menu at the top-right of the relic page.

Daily Rewards

Players will now receive 3 to 5 relics each time they launch the game for the first time that day:

Game Finish Rewards

After completing a run, players will now be rewarded 3 to 5 relics (an increase from the flat 3 relics previously). These rewards will appear in the same pop-up as the daily rewards.

On the topic of end-game rewards: runs lasting 30+ minutes in Endless Mode will now count as a victory instead of a loss.

Component Changes

A small but important update: players will no longer be offered components they don’t meet the requirements for.

New Element

Finally, let’s dive into the highlight of this update: a new element! For the first time since the elemental system’s implementation, I'm introducing Dark.

Dark-aligned weapons specialize in high-damage attacks at the cost of health. Each attack drains 3 points of health until 50% of your health is consumed, boosting the weapon’s crit rate by 50%.

Dark element interactions:

Lightning reaction (Disintegration) - instantly execute any enemy below 50% health
Light reaction (Nullification) - Cancels damage from the attack but increases the enemy’s elemental reaction effects by 200% (stackable).

New Weapons

There are a total of 11 new weapons and 1 new item. I’ll leave most of the discoveries to you, but here’s a sneak peek of what’s coming:

• Fireworks weapon (Unstable, AoE)
• Divine Punishment weapon (Light, Follow-Up)
• Frost Flames weapon (Ice, AoE)
• Thundering Slash weapon (Lightning, Follow-Up)
• Asteroid Belt weapon (Earth, AoE)
• Dark Projectile weapon (Dark, Pierce)
• Cursed Slash weapon (Dark, Simple)
• Devouring Mist weapon (Dark, DoT)
• Amaterasu weapon (Dark, AoE)
• Dark Affinity item (Dark Damage Increase)

New Locations

I don’t usually do this, but here’s a small preview of the new locations:

Bug fixes and improvements

Fixed Cosmic Affinity upgrades being replaced by Ice Affinity upgrades
Fixed Wind Affinity missing upgrades
Fixed Time Blade weapon's behavior
Fixed a game freeze when skipping a level-up after picking up a big magnet.
Fixed vulnerability application on multiple weapons.

I know some promised features haven’t been implemented just yet—most notably the new character, which I’m still working out the details for. (´。＿。｀)

I’ve also been experimenting with a new map generation system, and it’s showing a lot of promise, though I can’t make any guarantees about when it might be ready.

As the project continues to grow, the workload for new features has become more demanding, and I’ll admit it’s been a challenge to stay focused at times. I ask for your patience if some future updates take longer to release or include fewer features. Inspiration tends to come in waves for me, and I’m doing my best to avoid burnout so I can keep delivering quality content for the game.

In the meantime, I may also take some time to work on The Abyss, as its release deadline is getting uncomfortably close. (There’s still about four months to go, but the scope of that project is massive!)

Hello everyone!

Welcome to the new year! I hope everyone’s year is off to a great start. As for me, I’ve been catching all sorts of sick ever since Christmas 〒▽〒. Because of that, I haven’t had much energy to work on the planned features from the previous post.

Instead, I’ve decided to focus on a smaller update based on your feedback! This New Year’s special post will be divided into three parts:

Changes in version 1.8
Survey results for the year
A look back at the game’s earlier versions to see how far we’ve come 🎉

Patch notes

Endless Mode

Let’s start with a request from one of you in the Steam Community forums. I intended to add this feature eventually, and since someone voiced their interest, I decided to get to work!

To enable Endless Mode, head to the revamped game settings screen:

It now matches the style of other menus, which is a nice improvement. However, I may revisit it again in the future.

Once enabled, Endless Mode removes the usual 30-minute (or other) time limit.

Here’s how it works:

After the predefined waves are completed, enemies will spawn in random waves. This means any enemy can appear, including those from other maps.
Every minute, enemies’ health, damage, and speed will increase, and they will reward more EXP.
The game continues until you’re defeated.

You might ask, “But won’t it get boring? How can I keep getting stronger?” That brings us to our next feature!

Components

Components are available in both normal gameplay and Endless Mode. Think of them as gameplay-enhancing runes with a twist.

Here’s how they work:

Components appear after you’ve leveled up and maxed out all weapons and items.
Each component can enhance a specific weapon (based on its element), a character, or all equipped weapons, regardless of their element.

There are currently two types of components:

Flat Increase - These provide straightforward, fixed bonuses, similar to runes.
Conditional Increase - These require you to own a certain number of weapons of the same type or element. If you meet the criteria, you’ll gain significantly better buffs!

In the future, I plan to add more component types that go beyond simple stat boosts. Stay tuned!

Rune Menu

Another patch brings another set of improvements to the rune screen’s UI!

Based on survey feedback, there was still some room for improvement, and I think these changes will be quite helpful.

You can now filter runes by multiple stats:

While sorting options were requested, I thought this filtering system would be equally useful. However, if sorting is still needed, please let me know!

Another interface change can be seen on the rune list itself:

Runes no longer disappear from the list when equipped. Instead, they’ll remain visible with a small icon indicating which character is currently using them.

This makes it much easier to transfer runes between characters without navigating through multiple menus. You can even upgrade a rune for one character directly from another character’s page! If you prefer, you can also filter out equipped runes so they don’t clutter the list.

Achievements Menu

The Achievement Gallery has received a complete overhaul:

You can now filter achievements by multiple types and the maps where they can be obtained. This should make tracking your progress much easier!

Additionally, the new layout is more streamlined and consistent with the rest of the game’s interface.

Tutorials

In response to feedback that the game’s mechanics were confusing to some, I’ve added tutorials for most menus:

These tutorials explain the basics, as well as some less obvious options and clickable areas.

When you first launch the game, you’ll be prompted to view these tutorials. If you skip them, you can always access them later by clicking the question mark icon in the top-right corner of the screen.

Weapons and Items

I’ve spent an absurd amount of time refactoring most of the code behind the weapon and projectile systems. The work is finally done!

While I’ve tested most of the weapons, some bugs or inconsistencies may still appear. As I mentioned in my previous post, the refactor was necessary because creating new weapons was a huge pain. With this update, the process should now be much smoother.

This change also opens the door to potential modding support in the future!

To test the new system, I’ve added one new weapon and one new item:

Sacred Fire: A weapon that summons pillars of flame on nearby random enemies.
Cursed Mask: An item that lowers your max health but increases your damage.

CO-OP Networking

Networking in co-op often struggles when large numbers of enemies spawn, especially with players firing numerous projectiles. To address this, I’ve worked on reducing network traffic:

Players will now only see their own damage numbers, as this was a significant source of traffic.
The number of packets sent to handle individual damage instances has also been reduced.

Hopefully, these changes improve performance during co-op gameplay!

Download Size

I’ve finally figured out how to optimize Steam updates! Starting with this version, only the changed parts of the game will be updated, resulting in smaller download sizes.

This should make frequent updates less taxing on your bandwidth. However, the overall game size may have increased slightly in the process.

Minor Changes and Bug Fixes

Fixed a bug causing Yami-no-Tokiya's ultimate to prevent joining players from attacking for the rest of the game
Removed Static Discharge upgrade from Tornado
Interaction prompts will now display keybinds instead
Fixed incorrectly displayed skin price after clicking on buy
Recollection will now gurantee one of the boosted characters every 10 pulls instead of a random character
Added missing revive shrines to Northern Tundra
Added background music to Northern Tundra

Survey Results

Thank you to everyone who participated in the last version’s survey, especially those who took the time to write detailed feedback. I’ve read all your responses, and you can expect to see many of your suggestions implemented soon if they haven't been already!

Here’s a summary of the survey results:

Overall Satisfaction: Average rating is 6/10, indicating plenty of room for improvement.
Game Difficulty: Most players feel the difficulty is well-balanced.
UI Feedback: Some users find the UI lacking; I hope the new tutorials help. Let me know how I can further improve it!
AI Assets: While some players are critical of AI-generated assets, many are willing to overlook it, which I deeply appreciate.
Updates: Players prefer faster updates, though the current pace seems acceptable.
More Runes: This was the most popular request!
Character Design: Most agree that characters feel unique, which is fantastic to hear.
Recollection System: Opinions are divided. I believe it’s a fair gacha mechanic, but I’m open to suggestions.
Story: I was surprised to learn how much interest there is in the story! Expect more narrative development in future updates, that includes revisiting character shard stories!
Expectations: Players want more characters, weapons, and maps. While it’s challenging as a solo dev, I’m doing my best to deliver!
Game Identity: Requiem For a Lost World doesn’t stand out enough compared to similar games. I hope that it can be changed in the future.
Events: Players support adding more themed content, which I was initially hesitant about. I’m excited to explore this idea further!

Here are some specific requests I can address right now:

Map or Minimap: It’s coming! The feature existed previously but caused performance issues. I’ll revisit it soon.
Rune Combining: This is already in progress and should be ready for the next patch.
Story Mode: This is a big ask, but I will be starting my research to make it a reality at some point.

Old Stuff

To celebrate the end of 2024, let’s take a trip down memory lane and look at how far Requiem For a Lost World has come!

1.7.5 - Winter is here!

Hello, everyone!

If you’re celebrating, Merry Christmas! If not, enjoy your totally-not-festive days, Happy New Year, and all that good stuff.

I hope I’m not too late to the party (っ °Д °;)っ. Honestly, I started panicking when other games began releasing their updates last week. Turns out, having a deadline sucks, and I didn’t get as much done as I’d hoped. For some reason, I spent more time fighting with Unity than actually developing. But that’s beside the point—anyway, I hope everything is good now!

With that monologue out of the way: this update was a bit rushed, so please excuse any issues I didn’t have time to find or polish out.

Now, let’s dress up and get festive for the changelog! (≧∇≦)ﾉ

New Map

Let’s start with the most important part of the update: the frozen wasteland of the Northern Tundra!

I’ll leave the exploration to you! The map is roughly twice the size of Capital Outskirts, with puzzles and points of interest scattered throughout. More will be added over time.

Oh, and yes—the snow is interactive, in case you were wondering.

New Skins

Snow alone isn’t enough to sell the winter update, so we’ve also added some skins!

Winter skins are available for Amelia, David, Lucy, and Oana! These are the first skins in the game, so I hope you like them~ Each one costs 50,000 gems and can be purchased in the shop.

Winter event

For a limited time (until January 14th), players can earn rewards like runes and the free Amelia - Winter’s Joy skin!

You can claim one reward per day.

Weapons and Items

Excuse my laziness, I wanted to record some gifs of these weapons but I don't want to set the standard for future changelogs too high Never mind—I did it anyway (✿◡‿◡)

This update introduces 8 new weapons and 1 new item, all unlockable on the new map.

Wind Maelstrom

An interesting new Wind AoE type weapon that creates a wind vortex that pulls enemies toward you. It may sound useless, but maybe you can find a clever use for it

Unlock method: Find an overhang on one of the mountains, climb it, and stand on the edge next to the lamp.

Snowball

A simple Ice-type weapon—a snowball that flies in an arc. It’s not very practical, but it’s fun!

Unlock method: Enter the new winter map. That’s it.

Gift Box

This Fire Follow-Up weapon spawns little gifts on the ground that explode after a short delay. While active, the gifts accumulate damage dealt by other weapons to increase their explosion damage.

Unlock method: Defeat the final boss of the winter map.

Comet

Comet is a new Cosmic Follow-Up type weapon. Don't worry guys, I heard your cries about the meteors - so here is another one to clutter your screen! Whenever an elemental reaction is triggered the comet will be sent down at the location of that reaction. Sick!

Unlock method: Enter the floating island on the Northern Tundra via the teleport in the crater below it.

Flame Purge

A Fire AoE weapon that shoots a fiery beam in the direction your character is facing. I’ve wanted to add something like this for a while!

Unlock method: Find four pillars near the floating island and use Fire-type attacks on them until they’re fully lit.

Shockwave

This Earth AoE weapon releases periodic shockwaves that deal a single instance of damage around your character. Trust me, it looks better in-game than in the gif! 😭

Unlock method: Near the big cavern, find a chest on top of a pillar. You’ll need to parkour your way up to it.

Frost Breath

An Ice DoT weapon that releases a frosty mist in the direction your character is facing. Enemies caught in the mist are inflicted with Ice DoT. Finally, an Ice DoT weapon in the game—oops!

Unlock method: Find a hidden village in the mountainous area near the spawn

Orbital Strike

This Lightning AoE weapon works similarly to Summer’s Arrow Rain, prioritizing enemies with higher health.

Unlock method: Locate the ruins of a temple. Within the ruins, open the chest to obtain the weapon.

Black Gloves

This new item enhances AoE-type weapons by reducing their internal damage cooldown, allowing them to deal damage more frequently.

Unlock method: Find a small camp on the path between the cavern and the spawn. Look for a tent or a lamp hanging from a tree, and open the chest next to the gravestone.

UI stuff

DPS display

You can now track your DPS in real time with a new UI component.

Menu tooltips

Added tooltips to certain menus. Hover over UI elements to see what they do. Let me know if there are areas where additional tooltips would help!

Menu theme settigns

Added an option to switch between the new and older main menu themes. There’s also an early beta theme available to try out for those that never got the chance to see it.

Shop stuff

Stamina upgrade

You can now upgrade your stamina by buying the new permanent stamina upgrade!

Bug fixes and minor improvements

Fixed CO-OP enemy HP scaling (or rather, the lack of it).
Removed the flat lifetime increase from Amelia’s passive buff. It caused issues with some weapons, giving them permanent uptime.
Enemies now scale with the number of players currently alive, making it easier to revive teammates.
Fixed a bug that caused the game to freeze when using Tornado with only one enemy on the field. (This freeze was reported way back in 1.7.3—I finally found the cause!)

Future plans

Hey, it’s post-changelog dev here with some spoilers for upcoming content and whatnot! (●'◡'●)
Here’s what might be coming in version 1.8!

I have big plans, so I can’t promise everything will make it into the final build. I don’t want to give myself a strict deadline again! (ノ｀Д)ノ

Streamlining the Weapon Creation Process
This one doesn’t directly concern you as players, but adding weapons with my current workflow is a pain and takes far more time than it should. I want to make this process easier for myself in the future. However, this might take some development time away from features you can actually play with, so let me know what you think!
Possibly Another New Map
I’ve bought some assets to experiment with. I can’t promise a new map just yet since I’m not sure how or if these assets will work, but if they do, I’ll try to put one together.
Login Rewards
Nothing too big! I don’t want to force anyone to play the game daily, but I’d like to give something back to those who return every now and then.
Elemental Build-Ups
I recently picked up ZZZ, and their anomaly build-up mechanic really grew on me. I’d like to implement something similar as a meta-progression system for current and future characters, ideally synergizing with niche playstyles like DoT or pure elemental reactions. You know, actually use the elemental part of the game.
New Character
This character was teased on Twitter ages ago, and I still haven’t gotten around to completing them. I guess now is as good a time as any!
Custom Difficulties
This could involve a game settings screen rework, but I think it would be fun to let players tweak the game to their liking.

As you can see, there are big plans but limited time. Knowing myself, I’ll probably go off on a side quest and work on something completely unplanned! (●'◡'●)
