Do I need to play Baldur's Gate I or II before playing this to understand the story?

Or is this a standalone story that is not connected to either of those games?

Different game, and different story, however, for what I know, developers recommended BG1 -> IWD1 -> BG2 -> IWD2. This is because for IWD you should already know how to play and to have a decent knowledge of ADnD.

However the original games, not the enhanced edition, the enhanced edition is a different game.

You can buy the original games, search for "Dungeons & Dragons Anthology: The Master Collection". The original games works great in Win10, no issue. Or go to GoG store and buy from there.

Other thing you need to know. Icewind Dale is ADnD game, not a novel, which mean it plays similar to the tabletop ADnD game, which involve combat.
