I know reverse is too expensive, but maybe some kind of double check for the source?

With competition from games, such as Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2 or the upcoming Black Geyser: Couriers of Darkness, possibly also Pathfinder: Kingmaker, Beamdog would be ill-advised to spend resources on an enhanced edition of IWD2 if they got the source code. They better invest into creating a completely new game based on their modified Infinity engine.

theyd probably have to kickstart a complete remake if it would ever happen.

I remember reading about how Baldur's Gate 3: Black Hound became Neverwinter Nights. I was upset back in the day because I wanted more BG and hated the Aurora Engine (still do), but they could always hire some writers and make a BG3 with the Infinity Plus Engine. I'd play that.

i think most fans while they would love a BG3 would hate the series being "ruined"
the safer bet with less potential backlash would be an Icewind Dale 3/ total remake of Icewind Dale 2

the source code is in narnia and probably doesnt exist only real way would be to total remake the second in BG2's ruleset which would require a lot of balance checking and totaly changing the spells and gear
also i would like to say i am pretty sure beamdog does not look at these forums you would be more likely to get a dev responce on their forums
