Water on ground texture
It has been a few years since I messed with this sim but I was wondering if anyone worked out how to get rid of the sheets of water that seem to be on some of the ground textures. (I have the ORBX sceneries installed). I get this water on the ground and up hills and mountains. A bit disconcerting.

Reading through the orbx and other FSX forums regarding this problem made me remember what a pain this program could be. I was thinking of using FSW after importing sceneries from FSX but that had variable results. So dumping MS again and going back to AFS4. Thanks for your replies though, much appreciated.

On second thoughts I just uninstalled orbx stuff from FSX and will try using megascenery to see if the ground texture problem still exists.

Yes! Megascenery works really well. I uninstalled Orbx products. Megascenery is perfect if flying above 5000 feet. No weird ground texture problems either. They are closing down at the end of the year so if you want some photo scenery best get some while prices are very low and the opportunity exists.

It is likely you are having a well known problem with using Orbx and other landclass scenery textures that is caused by either reinstalling FSX or running Steam's file verification process for FSX. Orbx renames and replaces many core FSX scenery files so when you reinstall, or run file verification, it will replace all files Orbx scenery did with default scenery files causing the problem you describe. Here is the solution that I have taken from the Orbx forum and condensed.

STEP ONE

1. First run Verify files for Global Base and for all your open LC products.

2. Delete the file named lclookup.bgl located at Scenery\BASE\Scenery\lclookup.bgl

3. Then apply this terrain.cfg file fix (step two)

STEP TWO (Terrain Fix)

The easiest fix -- rather than hunting for specific incorrect or missing entries -- is to "refresh" the terrain.cfg file.

Note: this procedure also works if you receive the error message "the terrain.cfg file doesn't contain a [landclasses] section".

1. Delete the current terrain.cfg file

2. Copy the backup of the original terrain.cfg file and paste it into your main FSX/P3D folder. (Orbx makes a backup of this file)

3. Start Orbx Central and open the Settings\Help page. Run Sync Simulator.

4. Run FSX to see if the issue is resolved.

5. If the issue has been resolved, and you own other add-ons that require custom entries, like the Ultimate Terrain X series or FSAddon products (Vancouver+, Tongass Fjords X), you'll need to restore those entries too. For Ultimate Terrain all you need to do is to start each product's Setup.exe tools once (Windows Start Menu > All Programs > Flight One Software > Ultimate ... > Setup Tool). For other add-ons you need to use their respective repair options, e.g. Windows Start Menu > All Programs > FSAddon > Tongass Fjords FSX > Repair

6. Then run Verify Files for the Orbx Libraries.

END

You're welcome, I'm happy to help. It is a great idea to keep those steps handy, because you will need to repeat the process every time you reinstall FSX or verify the files.
