Just keep talking to the locals, "look" at the objects, listen carefully to each detail (even a joke may help)... It takes a lot of observation.
But I must admit that I've played a lot of P&C in my life, and I'm a big fan of Monkey Island, so it might help.
Take your time and don't be affraid of being stuck, it's supposed to make you think a lot . That's the challenge ^-^
This is whole point of adventure games. Its for you to figure out. Hence the puzzles. Walk around, talk to people (and listen). Piece together items and events. Combine everything, pick up everything, use everything on everything, go everywhere.
Telltale got better later on, I remember the very first Sam and Max episode, I got stuck on two things, i just couldn't figure out their logic... but all the games after that I was able to get through by just trial and error and click on stuff.
U can be the smartest person in the world, and it won't help you, its all just about having the right stuff on you and lots of time can miss it if you didn't click on some random sign post or something else random at some point and failed to grab some unknown item that will be vital at some point.
Play the old 90s adventure games, they are a nightmare for this, i'd get stuck almost at the very start of some of those games. Only amazing one was Day of the Tentacle, the game puzzles were mostly easy or not to difficult to trial and error them... fantastic adventure game for its time.
Anyway, I wanted to convey that while I love quite a lot of the story and hilarious commentaries, I find it a bit frustrating having to try so many combinations of actions, and clicking on EVERYTHING—and when you finally figure out what to do it's not even logical... it's "a bit" annoying. (Maybe I'm not as patient as I was last time I played it.)
To be fair Monkey Island games have a reputation for really stupid solutions to puzzles and it's almost a running joke at this point so you are definitely not alone.
