This game has been very frustrating at times (it's really difficult), but also addictive and rewarding when getting into a flow state. Shooting and dodging feels awesome, mostly thanks to the dodge roll. Pulling off a well-timed dodge in a sea of bullets is immensely satisfying, especially because the game punishes you if you use it as a crutch. Between the roll, blanks, and the various upgrades available, combat feels wonderfully fleshed out without ever straying from its core of shooting and dodging.

Atmosphere-wise, Enter the Gungeon hasn't exactly grabbed me, but the art and character designs are cute enough. I do appreciate the game's commitment to its gun theme and its punny sense of humor. I'm not a big fan of the music but that's okay, it doesn't detract.

I do have a few more pointed criticisms. Although the combat is fast-paced, the pace of the game overall can feel stunted since floors are so massive and movement speed isn't the fastest. Exploring floors is kind of boring and teleporters are a band-aid solution. Compare the amount of time spent on the action itself to a game like Cuphead and you can maybe see where I'm coming from. The dungeon crawling almost feels at odds with this games' greatest strengths. The Binding of Isaac has the same problem but gets away with it a little more since the atmosphere there is so thick. In Enter the Gungeon, the combat mechanics are fantastic but combat is continuously interrupted by much less interesting gameplay. I've heard "Turbo Mode" exists so looking forward to that.

When the game is at its best it is thrillingly good. The bosses are so much fun and going for flawless victories is as satisfying as it is infuriating (I mean this as a positive). Part of this great sense of reward comes from the fact that no gun or item feels too overpowered. I have yet to experience a "god run" and I'm not sure they even exist. I really respect Enter the Gungeon forcing me to master its mechanics and remain locked in at all times, which of course I have consistently failed to do.
