Long answer (spoilers!): This game is actually a story that touches upon heavy themes such as suicide, loss, heavy conflict and war, as well as others. It seems to be a cute and funny joke game, however that's really just a coverup for the surprising depth the game contains. Heavy spoilers ahead, so here's a second warning. Some of the darker scenarios include a character talking about how he killed himself, one character decapitating the player character and keeping their head in a jar, as well as a few others. And one final warning since these are the biggest spoilers for the secret route, one character is turned into a biological weapon to exterminate the remains of humanity against his will. One character goes insane mourning for his adopted brother who killed himself. Another character is stabbed with a poisoned knife and is seen bleeding as he dies. Oh, there's also a scene where an orphanage of young birds is massacred with only two survivors. None of these scenes are graphic, as they all use the same images of the birds throughout aside from the blood covered bird. There's also a mysterious character with a bloody burlap sack over the head with a robotic body and sharp metal claws that hunts down the characters. These scenes are very creepy with sound design and visuals. Almost everything aside from this character is merely stated through dialog instead of being shown, however. Scenes such as the orphanage sometimes visually tint the screen red, however nothing else is shown aside from a static image of the building itself. If your 9 year old can handle things such as these (some 9 year olds are pretty damn brave!) then it can be a very fun time. If you have any more questions, please and I can answer them. Thank you!
There's definitely a lot in here that a 9-year-old could find entertaining, and much of the gameplay itself is perfectly innocent. I read a lot as a kid, with basically no parental oversight, and I think I would have been able to handle this because it's not necessarily any more difficult than anything you could find in a (YA/adult) book. That said, there are some situations that might be particularly triggering for kids because of the school setting, family issues, etc. (see spoilers above). Hope this helps!
I personally wouldn't recommend it for a nine-year old based on that alone, but if you're only worried about sexually explicit stuff there's really nothing in there beyond some minor flirting from mostly one character.
It isn't visually disturbing and it's not particularly sexual. Certainly it's not visually sexual.
A lot of the fun comes from having played similar dating games so that you know the tropes and can laugh at how the game is turning them on their head.
There's also all the mature content listed in the first spoilered post. It's all done very well, but a 9 year old isn't going to get much out of it beyond blood spatters because they don't have the broader experience to appreciate it. I'd really say this game is more for 14 and up.
If you want an alternate, mostly light hearted game for your kid, I'd recommend Magical Diary, which is basically a dating sim set in Hogwarts, with the closest thing to sexual content being a kiss.
It looks like a silly joke game, but Hatoful boyfriend is actually a political drama meets surreal thriller masquerading as a dating sim. I know, it sounds unfeasible and bizarre, but it's true. It shocked me in my late teens, so for a nine year old, the themes discussed and atrocities that come to light would be very overwhelming.
One of my favorite games of all time, but she probably needs to grow up a little bit more before she's ready to play.
