Custom Challenge: Last Cinder
First, I'm not sure if it's cool putting custom challenge ideas/descriptions in the general forum. I notice several are in fan creations, but I figure that sub forum prob doesn't get much attention, so I'd rather put it here if that's cool.

Second, I don't know if hardly anyone likes to use custom challenges outside the common ones like NOGOA and such. Because of that, I don't think I'll post the full details now, just the broad strokes, and if anybody shows interest in the full description, I'll post follow ups in the discussion.

As for why I'm bothering with a new challenge, I've played a few of my own custom challenges in the past and I find they really do a lot to make the game less stale. I recently came back after a very long hiatus from TLD, and this new cheat death system got me thinking, along with watching a youtuber named Archimedes who has a series for a really complex and brutal challenge of his own called Scarcity. I loved the concept, though the implementation was a bit much to deal with (still very interesting though), and involved rolling a d20 for a lot of loot and shelter access. Anyway, the seed was planted for an idea of a new challenge of my own that uses cheat death at the outset, custom mode tweaks, and a variety of self-imposed rules. I'm calling it Last Cinder. It's got just a tiny bit of complexity, but no d20 rolls needed or anything.

So if anyone reads this far, here's the broad strokes:
  • Consume all cheat death pips in either FM or DP, and select permanent 50% max condition and safe/far re-spawn with the final cheat
  • Custom game settings that start with interloper but enable the best loot and the rifle, and other balance adjustments both positive and negatively to make the challenge work and be both difficult but playable.
  • Birch bark crafting is off, at-rest condition recovery is off (normal condition recovery is interloper standard)
  • With some notable exceptions no looting of containers
  • A number of user enforced rules make changes to a lot of standard mechanics, things like no stealthing around predators, must craft all ammunition, can't use the forge, no harvesting of reishi or rosehips, cattails must be consumed immediately upon harvest.
  • Useage of warm indoor locations including caves and transitions requires an item sacrifice using a tiered value system (this is the source of the minimal complexity as it involves a reference table to determine what items will "unlock" useage for each location based on its "usefulness") You can still loot freely (though only loose items), but can't warm up for any longer than it takes you to loot it, and once looted it's fully locked down.
  • Prepper caches can't be entered till day 50, and can't be looted till day 100 (again, only for loose items, not containers)
  • Similarly, several restrictions lift at certain survival milestones
That's it for now, I'm having fun testing it out, it's brutal and I've already had to do quite a few tweaks with the custom settings and a couple of my initial restrictions just to make it past the first few days. The full description for the challenge will be much more in depth and I'll explain the concept behind each change or rule, but that's only if people show some interest by commenting below.
Here's the custom settings code if you want to look at it. Without the full picture it won't necessarily be obvious why each change has been made, but I'll explain it fully if there's a reason to: 8uzM-Qh/H-Cx+a-BZVe-+I4A

Reserving for further description

Reserving for further description (so it won't end up on page 3 or something)

One more reserve (Pretty sure there's a limit to the amount of text in a post/reply, that's the only reason I'm doing these)

Hey darkSol,
Have you further tested this challenge? Seems like it was still in a testing state at the time. If you feel like it works and have clear rules, I can add it to the custom player created challenges sticky post in this forum... if you want of course.

Well, I tested and reworked it quite a bit actually, but I did find that the set up causes a lot of RNG luck in where you initially spawn, with quite a lot of non-starter type runs. I didn't bother to update my post since nobody seemed much interested.
