Whats the point of snares
I have been playing TLD for a while now. And i have never seen the point of snares like why would you waste the cured gut crafting the snare when that cured gut can be used to craft other more useful things like line or bows or even a wolf fur coat etc. All you need to catch a rabbit is a rock thats it. Sure hitting a rabbit with a rock is not the easiest thing to do but after 376 hours of playing the game i have gotten pretty good at it. So i would be greatful if someone would tell if snares are worth useing.

PS before you say it i know about the catching 1000 rabbits with scares badge and i might get that badge. Maybe.....

The rabbits you can catch with snares are not in the same pool as the rabbit you can catch with stones so it's still worth it as the gut used for the snare can catch multiples rabbits before being damaged.

Ah i see. i wonder do i have to place the snare in a area with rabbits or can i place it anywhere and get free food? Otherwise its worth the time for me.

You have to place it in a rabbit area. Also I think after a few caches, you won't get more rabbits that way until it replenishes.
From my experience, having a consistent income of rabbit carcasses with very minimal effort. As above mentioned, it isn’t the same pool of rabbits that physically spawn. Put 3 snares in a rabbit grove that is near your base, and you’ll just keep getting rabbit after rabbit after rabbit. That is free guts for crafting, hides for repairing mitts and hats, and free food — not the greatest food or efficient for calorie per kg, but mass amounts of rabbit meet is good for stockpiling outside your base and just filling up before an adventure to not eat into your more calorie per kg efficient bear/moose meat and non-renewable artificial foods.

And when I mean consistent rabbits, I don’t mean oh wee, a new rabbit every third day! I mean I was catching so many rabbits over the course of weeks consistently, I had to put the snares away because they were catching too many rabbits that I was overwhelmed having to spend hours harvesting them every single day (or maybe 1 hour to harvest multiple with a knife, but that uses a lot of unnecessary knife durability harvesting rabbits every single day).

Edit: to clarify, you kind of need a workbench in your base or nearby enough to stockpile snares, then have a rabbit grove relatively nearby. Snares don’t degrade but they occasionally break once and awhile, so you need backups to what you place, or the ability to just craft new ones. Which isn’t hard, only 30 minutes on a crafting table, a little more if you count harvesting the broken snare for its reclaimed wood. There is often plenty of time once and while where you’re unsure on what to do, whether it’s a blizzard or what, or something, so 30 minutes of having something to do is not a problem. Rabbit grove nearby is more important, since you’ll be catching rabbits pretty much every day, if not multiple per day, if you have to walk to the grove then you might as well just use stones or something. But if you live in trapper’s cabin in mystery lake, or pleasant homestead in mountain town, or one of the several places on the map where you stay and there’s a rabbit grove literally just right there, snares is a consistent supply of food, guts, and hide where the most effort spent by the player is spending the less-than 2-minutes grabbing them then resetting the snares, then the game-time process of harvesting the rabbits, every day, over and over. If I didn’t care about knife durability, or the hour+ per rabbit to harvest by hand, I would still be using snares — as mentioned I stopped using them temporarily because they are literally too efficient and I stockpiled too much of their resources and don’t need any more.

Danm i was hopeing that you clould place the scare anywhere but that would make the scares a bit op. Eh maybe if i find a free scare ill put it down. Thanks for the info:steamthumbsup:

Well,

Hi there. If you would like the opinion of the 2nd or 3rd guy on these forums to get to 500 days with interloper 5 years ago, before a coma took him out, using snares almost completely, you are about to get it.

Unfortunately, if you ABSOLUTELY DO NOT want, at all, the opinion of said fellow, even with all that obvious TLD virtue dripping from his aged and experienced self, you are also about to get it. 'Tis a 2-edged sword, really.

Snares rock.

I lived at Trappers Cabin for 1.5 years seeing where the little rabbit footprints were going and leaving 4 or 5 snares around my posh little crib.

I had so much rabbit fur, guts, and meat for a lifetime, giving me the freedom to...do whatever else.

Throwing stones at bunnies is also mean. Whats wrong with you? Do you take some pleasure in snapping their cute necks?

Sicko.

They did add fire-hardened arrows for rabbits too, I tested them out and they are not bad. Not great because bow durability, but not bad either…

OP,

Rabbit assassination is a tough topic that needs more discussion. Whether or not one form or another of rabbit assassination is preferable to me is irrelevant. Right?

You also assume that term "sicko" was a down-the-nose remark. It was not, but I understand your reaction. It was my form of a complement.

I should have said "fellow sicko."

Heh not going to lie i was expecting you to start calling me all types of slurs after i said i would start shooting rabbits with a rifle. I still dont get why some people in this fanbase get so upset when someone taiks about killing rabbits. I mean come on this is a survival game for ♥♥♥♥ sake. i am not going to die cause i felt bad for killing rabbits. And yes i assumed that the term sicko meant a down the nose remark. whatever that means. To be honest am useto hearing insults thrown my way but this is the first time i am writeing to someone that doesint resort to slurs to say their opinion. I mean i am not going to stop throwing rocks at rabbits BUT i respect that you caught me off guard with your reply.

Let's talk about throwing rocks some more, Zack.

Do you throw them at wolves? I throw a torch at a wolf if I have one, but if I didn't, would there be any reason to throw a rock at anything but a rabbit?
