Mandatory story missions are boring
I've been "stuck" in a hand-holdy, compulsory story-mission for a few hours now. All I want to do is craft things and and explore on my own. I'm not that interested in NPCs and "buddies" following me around. This happened after I discovered Ginormosia, and was sent through time. Will the game open up again soon? I enjoyed the first 3-4 hours, but now the game loop has totally changed into a not-so-interesting RPG.

You really shouldn't be stuck in any given story mission for long. The main plotline constantly opens up opportunities for you to explore again.
After you got your first buddy, normaly the quest should lead you back home. Otherwise use your map to go back to the "present" there would be a short story mission on how to build your base. Afterwards you are free to do what you want to a certian degree.

The place where I'm "stuck" is dealing with a man who's been turned into a watering can, and after turning him back, looking fro a "Spirit Hoe". Very boring quest.

Are you absolutely sure you're "stuck" doing that? Like, it's not letting you quick travel anywhere?

Sounds like you need to go to the new island on that map.

Thanks. I'll get the spitit hoe, and then leave the mandatory story quests for a while, I guess.
