I miss this game
I wish I could find a game that fills the hole that this game left. There just honestly isn't anything like it. I wish they would let the community host their own servers or sell the game off to some other company. But I know its not going to happen, sadly.

Same, I kinda wish I had spent more time playing it and yet at the same time, I would have missed it even more now if I had.

yeah... I wish they would release a standalone single player vs at least....without them requiring the need to have dedicated servers.

The scam was real with this one, I had so much high hopes when I saw the player-made structures and was like : finally a game with pure exploration and where you can build your empire !

It's extremely sad how they handled this game so poorly.

Yeah. I loved this game. There's nothing quite like it.
Keen Software House has two games that get close to filling the void, but they are less moldable and not quite the same. At least they both support offline play and official/custom servers.

Honestly, it was not a scam. Next began development under SoE. With awesome Devz like DynamoDev (Hiya Adeste!). What happened is Daybreak (pronounced Dey-break) Games purchased SoE through Columbus Nova (Russian Federation Investment conglomerate). And then they terminated every good dev from EQ2/EQNext in a major downsizing/reduction in staffing. To meet the profit margin for investors.

Once this happened the future of EQNext/Landmark was known. Far as the content. It is abandoned ware. As they have stated, cancelled. While the server side files are out there somewhere, the engine was a hybrid havoc physics engine named Lightforge. Which would not take a lot of effort to reproduce, if in fact anyone would still want to use it. With other newer, modernized engines being available for both rendering, as well as core code engine.

And the client side files are also out there. If anyone backed their folders up, and did not uninstall immediately when the game was cancelled.

However, the only thing you would have to do is a) modify the code so it is a unique engine again (add a few new lines), and b) name it something other than "EverQuest" as that is a copyrighted/trademarked franchise owned by Daybreak.

In fact, any former SoE Dev that was released by Daybreak could in fact develop, or release the former alpha/beta server & client files as FREEWARE/ABANDONED WARE. Just so long as they modified it slightly to add new code to the engine, and of course renamed it.

I do agree though, since EQ2 went south in 2016/2017 I gave up on Daybreak. Retired my EQ2 toon(s), and have yet to find a suitable replacement. The entire MMORPG industry has gone stale, or are utilizing generic interfaces/content. Even EQ2 was hacked up to add new content, instead of developing a more modern rendering & code engine. Still stuck on CPU rendering, instead of the industry standard of GPU rendering.

But we can wait patiently for either a) the industry to reinvent itself, or b) someone, somewhere to release the alpha/beta files, and modify them in such a way as to make them unique. The key is to get the uncompiled code. And they are out there on someones private servers.

Besides Minecuck, I don't know any game that could allow proper character customization + being able to terramorph your own lil world.

Really sad, we only got themepark crap nowadays

Guys, I've been playing a game that comes very very close to it. It's called Duel Universe

https://www.dualthegame.com/en/

I've put many fun hours into the game. It's under NDA so anything you want to know you will have to YouTube via NQ (Nova Quark) or check on the site. If any of yall get the game you will be welcomed into my Org and I'll show you the ropes.

Just let me know!

I wish so much that BallBreak would just release the damn game so we can run it on private servers. What's the point of hanging on to it while tech moves beyond it? It certainly isn't going to make them any money.

Is it sad that I STILL miss EQ? Probably doesn't help that I use my very first MMO character as my avatar.. but she's STILL my favorite. /sigh
