my gamepad doesn't work with it

I am genuinely convinced this stage is impossible in iron wizard mode without any of the component skills, any second hand opinion on the matter? best I could do on my own is die to a reaver that deletes 93% of my mana.

In particular, on field J4 fat boys with a ridiculous amount of hitpoints go in and wreck my arse even after getting all their armor shredded off, and by then I need mana to Not Die and cant afford any to improve offensive defences...

Hi, I've beat the game but now am ready to start doing more end game type things, but on tutorials that I've seen they seem to have all gems unlocked for a given field and if I'm tying to follow along I simply don't have all of them available to use. What am I missing here? Is there a separate game mode? From what I can see I'm doing everything identically, but I'll show up on a field and just not have all 9 colors there. Any help or insight would be appreciated!...
