Feral Blue — Announcement!

Hi everyone!

Today we're very happy to announce our new project, currently in active development. This game is called Feral Blue.

We've always been fond of sailing ships. Actually, there are about three things regarding games we're very passionate about: how to make our own version Heroes of Might & Magic 3, how to make our own version of "Pirates!" and how to finish our very own Fatherdale[imgur.com]. These kinds of 'DIY engines' we worked with before can do miracles in some of the luckiest cases, but obviously that's not something we can say about ourselves. So it's a great thing that an indie team of two people can start making a game with Unreal Engine 4 (we still remember when it was a luxury for a very few).

Sailing ship is always about the freedom. You can't get the same unforgettable feeling of salty splashes getting to your face in Titanic or in a WW1 dreadnought. This is the basic emotion that we wanted to convey with Feral Blue — freedom and the sea. In addition, we are doing our best to introduce the concept we've been working on in our games for the past few years: going from controlling your crew to controlling your settlement and then — to controlling your empire. We want players not just upgrade their stats, but their level of responsibility. At the same time, when you're fed up with everything, you have the ability to get out of your office, gather your crew of veterans and set sail on a frigate, to cut the Maltese in boarding fights. Yes, it seems we have our first game, where the Maltese will be among the main factions.

We took a long time to figure out what the game will look and play like. First it was FTL — but we realized it's not something we want to go with (by the way, if you do want to play FTL about sailing ships — buy Abandon Ship). Of course, we took some ideas from our own Blood & Gold. Russian classics Sea Dogs is our current reference to naval battles (programmer's note: debatable).

In terms of the game's setting, we're taking inspiration from Waterworld (1995) and Master & Commander (2003) — sea, ships, sometimes very weird ones, naval battles in the fog. Also, we were greatly influenced by Snowpiercer (2013), with its idea of a state locked inside the train.

Feral Blue is a typical case of a game we'd like to play ourselves. But we hope it will be of interest not only to us, but you as well! For now, you can wishlist the game on Steam. See you soon!

B&G: Caribbean! — Blackjack and hookers

Hi everyone,

"With Fire & Sword" was often called "Warband with guns", "Caribbean!" — Warband with ships. With Blood & Gold we wanted to go a little further and make "Warband with blackjack and hookers". So today's post is dedicated to some of the most important part of the game: brothels and blackjack mini-game.

Let's start with the card game. In taverns you can meet players of different skill level: some are playing with smaller bets, other like to to play big. Any tavern keeper can give you info on where you can find the blackjack players.

[snowbirdgames.com]The game itself is played by the classic rules, so your tactic to win could be traditional[en.wikipedia.org]. But if you feel that cards you're getting aren't that good, you can always try to take your chance and rig your hand— if you succeed at that, you'll win, and if not, prepare to have your face beaten. Cheating success will depend on your "Gambling" skill.

However, if the game does end up in a fight, you can beat your opponents yourself with a stool or a broken bottle. We were often ask to add tavern brawls into the game, so now it's finally here.

[snowbirdgames.com]If you're broke and beaten after a blackjack session, your self-respect can be restored with the help of a procurer and his ladies. They can also be found in taverns. Apart from providing their basic service, hookers can also help you arrange a private meeting with someone you need, improve relationship between you and some governor, and let you know which of the governors plans to leave his faction.

Finally, if you always dreamt of building a brothel business, you can try to lend your protecting services — provided you already have an impressive reputation.

B&G: Caribbean! — New module system

Hi everyone,

Back in the day, when we worked on "With Fire & Sword" (we were a part of the team that created this game), we weren't well prepared to working with the modding community. A pretty big mistake on our end, admittedly. And it's not far-fetched to say that a big part of success of Mount & Blade series is owed to a large variety of great mods and the modding community itself. With Blood & Gold we decided to approach this aspect a bit more responsibly.

[snowbirdgames.com]The module system will become available on the game's release or very close to it. It is more refined and includes a number of important improvements that will make creating mods considerably easier. Here are some details for you:

When working with the Warband's module system, every entity is presented as a single large file (scripts, scene props, dialogues etc.). In the updated version it's possible to work on separate game elements (a single script, for example), that are located in separate files. This method frees modders of having to use giant files with 30000 lines, making their work easier and more efficient. For any changes or additions you won't have to edit the file as a whole, you can just rewrite or add necessary scripts. Several people could work on the code at once as well.

It's now possible to see the dialogue tree. Every dialogue is located in its own directory, every line — in its own separate file. A lot of dialogue lines means a lot of files — this isn't very good, but it makes editing and fixing dialogues much more easier.

Same system is applied to the game's presentations, troops and items. All of these can be set separately and can be found easily.

Lastly, multiplayer component can now be placed in a separate module, making it a "mod" for a single player game. This helps making the build simpler and more compact for making MP-based mods.

B&G: Caribbean! — Faction control

Hi everyone,

Today we'd like to tell you about controlling your faction in Blood & Gold. Many of you fairly noted that governor management and diplomacy in "Caribbean!" was lacking. So here's what we did:

1) Now players can assign any of his followers as a governor. You can also entice governors from other factions. Governors can be assigned to attack a certain town, patrol selected area or follow your army around the map.

2) After creating your own faction, you can hire necessary managing specialists: Treasurer, Drillmaster, Sutler and Secretary.

[snowbirdgames.com]3) Treasurer grants you access to economy control: sending convoys, trading through the clerk system in towns and operations with bank deposit.

3) Drillmaster lets you "transform" the troops you no longer need into your faction's army. For example, you might have a small troop of runaway slaves armed with pickaxes. By spending some of your gold, you can train them and turn into, say, a troop of musketeers.

4) Sutler helps you to supply your army with provisions (in case you happen to be far from your supply base) or provide your troops with regular food delivery.

5) Secretary give you access to diplomacy: with his help you can declare war, try to make peace (which will now cost you MUCH more, so better act civil!), assign and dismiss your governors governors.

B&G: Caribbean! — Economy & Business

Hi everyone,

When we were making "Caribbean!", there was always one thing we had at the back of our minds — implementing some kind of a "global economy presentation". It would let players see what they produce and in which towns, have an ability to sell everything they wanted and, ideally, be able to transfer their goods from one town to another.

Here's how we decided to deal with this in B&G. We added two new characters, the "Clerk" and the "Banker". Clerk is needed if you want to start having business in the town you're currently in — you can no longer just come with lots of gold on hand and buy some tobacco plantations. He will also be responsible for managing your storage and convoys. Banker can replenish your deposit, thereby keeping your savings in case you get captured (see our previous post[snowbirdgames.com] on this subject). With Banker you can get access to your statistics, it looks like this:

Transfer money to an account — gold from there will be spent for purchasing raw materials for your property.
Get information on which towns contain your fleets (you can now have several), your army and your property.
Choose if you want to automatically sell goods or buy raw materials for your property.

Clerk gives access to another presentation:

[snowbirdgames.com]Here you can form a convoy from some of your available ships, load it with goods and choose a destination point. Convoy can be attacked and robbed, and its ability to defend depends on the state of your ships. If they don't have enough ammo or crew, their cannons don't work properly, there's a chance you won't ever see it again. At the same time nothing stops you from going after your convoy and defend it personally from sea robbers (like yourself).

B&G: Caribbean! — Slavery and escape

Hi everyone,

We never really liked how players could escape automatically after their imprisonment in "Caribbean!" or M&B games. This is a role-playing game after all, and the player should be in control of his own destiny. Besides, there were other oddities and some illogical things. For example, even after being held captive by forest bandits, players could run away from them with their gold, armor and weapons on hand, losing only some boots and a horse. Or losing a sword and gloves maybe, but keeping the horse.

[snowbirdgames.com]It's not very clear if we try to think of this aspect logically. Obviously, prisoners would lose ALL their valuable items, not just randomly selected ones. So if you're defeated in battle in Blood & Gold, here's the list of not very pleasant option you will face:

All personal items are taken away by the winning side. This includes armor, weapons, horses and gold on hand (by the way, this is why it's better to keep your money in bank in Blood & Gold).
You are sold into slavery — to work in a mine or plantations, depending on your luck.
You receive a prisoner robe and some work equipment.
You can try to escape from a mine or plantations, but if you're caught in the process, guards won't be too happy about it and will proceed to beat you pretty hard (all the way to lowering your base characteristics, like strength or intellect). So better act careful.
If you're confident about your charisma, you could try talking other prisoners into rebelling and escaping as a group.
If your escape is successful, then, depending on your charisma and leadership traits, you could form a new troop of runaway slaves which will become another one of your parties.
With this troop you could try robbing caravans, attacking convoys, sell prisoners into slavery, thus taking revenge for your trouble.
If you're concerned about your lowered intellectual level after taking some beating during your imprisonment, you could visit one of Catholic abbeys. Nuns will do their best to fix you up.

Blood & Gold: Caribbean!

Hi everyone,

Today we're happy to introduce "Blood & Gold: Caribbean!" — a reborn project with a more fitting title, filled with lots of community's most wanted features. It's coming to Steam and GOG on December 10th, free for all current owners of "Caribbean!".

The current game will still be available for download, as its savegames won't be compatible with B&G, so you can always continue your journey there if you like.

[snowbirdgames.com]However, we'd strongly advice to make the switch and start anew, because this is what you can expect when the new game comes out in December:

- Addition of the native Caribbean troops.
- Playable female character.
- Ability to take a walk in town.
- All new 3D global map.
- Multiplayer mode.
- Blackjack minigame.
- Quests from governors.
- Special missions, including assassination contracts, some of which require stealth approach.
- New special locations: plantations, mines, monasteries, ruins of Aztec empire.
- Management of the player’s trading caravans.
- Hub for managing player's business and property in a much more convenient way.
- Completely reworked land battle locations.
- Updated fleet management — ships will have to be kept at bay when you proceed to travel on land.
- Destructible fortifications during sieges.
- New prison escape system.

We’ll explain how some of these new features will work in the coming weeks. For now, here are some new screenshots:

Status Update #11

Hi everyone,

First of all, we're sorry for the long overdue update on the status of 'Caribbean!'. The truth is we never stopped working on the game since the last update — we decided to take a break with smaller weekly updates and focus on the changes of a grander scale instead.

However, along with this decision we also realized that, as much as we wanted to let you know what we were working on, we also really didn't want to disappoint people in case something wouldn't make its way into the game after all. Much of the stuff we wanted to add or change was in the works at the same time, so we ran a high risk of letting people down if something got cut in the last moment. All in all, not the best situation to find ourselves in, but we kept our silence nevertheless.

But now that we're back here with you, we thought we'd come out with a little teaser of the official announcement, which you can expect to see next week. So for now, here's a glimpse of something we've been working on for the past few months:
