Need help understanding the start of the story (no spoilers please)
Ok so I played the remake but I am still confused about the start of Rebirth (I am currently in chapter 2).
Can anyone explain to me one thing: how exactly is the connection to the first game?
Did they arrive in Kalm directly after the ending of the first game?
If so, wouldn't that follow exactly the original?
Wasn't the big reveal that they are "unchained" from fate a bit wasted then?

Of course there could be more to it later in the game, it would be great if spoilers could be keept to a minimum, it just confused me why the story seemingly follows the original when the whole topic of the first game was to fight against the actual timeline......

Edit: I assume so far the Clouds retelling of the Nibelheim incident was a different timeline since he never fought sephirot there and all, that was our boy Zack and "our" Cloud has mixed memories with the "alternate" Cloud.

Yes and yes.
Yeah I found it kinda weird how they started rebirth myself but basically in the original version when you left midgar you en up in Kalm and the party then ask what the story is between them and Cloud starts sharing the Nibelheim chapter.

Honestly they should have added that as a start before going into the flashback.
at the end of remake they leave midgar and head towards kalm. at the end of remake dlc it shows them arriving at kalm. and then rebirth picks up with cloud telling the nibelheim story as they are spending the night at the inn in kalm
Ok but so basically the ending fight of the remake against the fate overloard (or whatever he was called) does not matter AT THE MOMENT, right?
Currently it is basically CD2 of the original as far as I am understanding this.

But since I haven't played the original in a long time: did cloud also told the Nibelheim story in the original with himself at the main character or did he talk about Zack back then?

barret asks cloud to tell them about it at the beginning of rebirth, and the game shows them arriving at kalm at the end of remake and dlc.. like you didn’t miss anything except cloud asking for a room

To be fair, I didn't play the DLC myself because I personally dislike Yuffi, just not my preferred archetype of personality, so maybe a good amount of people didn't do so as well.
The game would have been a bit more newcomer friendly if the summary at the start included the dlc story beats.

shame the DLC was awesome - Combat way better and Yuffie was really well written! (I also dont like her in og)

Whats not to get?

They beat the Whispers who have been hijacked by some out of space and time Sephiroth in Remake and then head to Kalm. It picks up with them just after arriving and Cloud spilling his guts about what he knows about Sephiroth (who they just fought) to try and learn whatever they can to help in their fight against him in the future.

Then it follows on until they get chased out of Kalm and decided their best bet is to follow the experiment goobers that Sephiroth occasionally hijacks.

From there the story follows the broad strokes of the original game but with the added plot point of Sephiroth and the Whispers and Fate being different adding different context for those plot points.

There are many things that happen the same for different reasons and some things that are altered slightly in ways we wont be sure how it will affect the future.

Then there are some things that are just completely reworked like how you meet Yuffie, Cid and Vincent.

So the Whispers of Fate boss isnt relevent directly after that. Its not as though Sephiroth constantly hounds them for a fight the rest of the game, although he still makes his appearances trying to break Cloud's bond with his allies which was what ultimately defeated him in the original.

If I say more I risk saying something specific that spoils things which you said you didnt want.

They probably realised the whole Kingdom Hearts storytelling bs about changing the story of the OG game was a bad idea and went back to actually making a remake of FF7 instead of making a sequel

I still hope one day we'll get an actual remake of a FF game, if they keep doing this Nomura bs i hope they never touch the great ones like 6, 9 and 10
