ローグライクアクションにしてはめずらしく固定マップで、入り組んだ構造とショートカットのギミックが凝っています。よくわからない場所を飛び下りたらボス部屋だったり、2周目からは複数のルートが選択できたりするのは良い。

良く言えばアンロック要素が豊富、悪く言えばメタプログレッションを前提としたバランスなので、狭い意味でのローグライク要素はゼロ。最初の５ランくらいは地獄ですが、スキルをいくつか解放すると面白くなってくるでしょう。

死ぬと最初からやり直しですが、一度倒したボスや通過した場所はスキップもできます。固定マップならではのリプレイ性があると思います。経験値が欲しいときはちまちまと雑魚狩りもできますが、敵を倒すと呪いがスタックしていくので、楽な稼ぎプレイはやりづらい。しかし呪われた状態で儀式を行うとすごいバフがかかるチャンスもあるので、しっかりと雑魚を倒して経験値とアイテムを回収するか、さっさと先に進むかは悩むところ。

特定の場所でカメラアングルが固定されるのが厄介で、ボス戦でカメラが壁の向こうに回ってしまうときがありました。アーリーアクセスのうちに修正されることを期待。

I have become seriously obsessed with Heretical. It's one of the first games to truly grab me for 20+ hours in a long time. Get it.

Really good for what it is.

It's a small game, but with a surprising amount of depth and structure to it.

It's a souls-like rogue-like, kind of. Mechanics are solid, controls are good, and there's something new you get to play with every run.

Bosses are simple, but well executed. Every enemy is simple, but presents a fairly balanced challenge.

There are a few things I dislike, but for what this game is, they are easily overlooked.

The things to dislike:
1. There is pointless fall damage, which punished occasionally poor controls. You wear off the stairs, fall and lose 50% HP ending your run, no reason and no point to it.
2. Pointless falling off the map. Yes, that's right, there are a few places where you can fall off the map and die, one push from the enemy or a physics glitch and you're done. It would make more sense if this was an ever-present danger, but there are only a few places like that at the very start of the game where difficulty should be lower.
3. Some enemy abilities are just silly, like the rats that jump at you forever if you get too close. It's manageable, but feels super unbalanced. Similarly, there is a lightning enemy towards the end that casts BS spell that isn't telegraphed, has no prep-time and does insane damage
4. Some classes are just inherently much stronger than others. For example - 1h melee is super weak, 2h hammer is F tier as well. Abilities with cooldowns are almost pointless, due to their very low overall DPS
5. Stats are unbalanced. Dexterity is strong, Strength is decent, Intellect is ok and Vitality is just bad. Why ? Dex gives you damage in form of crits, survivability in form of movement speed and dodge. Strength makes you hit harder and take a bit less damage. Intellect only impacts magic, and makes you take a bit less damage, but it doesn't scale as well as strength. Vitality just gives you 5 HP, which is bad.
6. Too many items drop. I often find myself reviewing 20-30 items, and it's just a boring chore
7. Bonuses on equipment and blessings are not balanced at all. The best bonus is +1 to all skills. Consider an alternative that gives you +8% crit, that crit will improve your damage by, say 8% which is good, and +1 to all skills will improve your damage and survivability by some 20% easily, overall it's just way superior.
