The game was pretty good in my opinion. There were fewer bugs than in Lord Of the Rings. But overall I recommend the game. There were easy and difficult puzzles, which I really liked.

Yeah I thought it was pretty good, I enjoy the setting and all the crafting and team mechanics that the game introduced, but I thought it was quite odd that they ended the game before the battle of the five armies. The game just ends with Smaug destroying Lake Town. I don't know if this was for budget reasons or time constraints but it did leave me wanting more. it is fine over all.

I wish they finished this. Otherwise it would be a great game.

Really unpleasant to play on a PC. Controls are horrible and it forces you to have a split screen and control multiple characters.

Fun as all Lego games. There are a few really impressive levels.
One minus: the "open-world" part when you can change the character starts very late.

I ended up quite enjoying Lego LOTR. Given how samey these games can be according to the people who played lots of them i thought i'd be getting, of course, more of the same with The Hobbit, maybe slightly worse due to the lesser source material, but overall still a decent time. Unfortunately this one fails in a lot of ways that i didn't initially expect.

On a basic level, Lego The Hobbit is fine. All the ingredients that made LOTR good are there, in theory: good sense of humour, variety, replayability, lots of fanservice, a simple but addictive gameplay loop. It's really how all of this has been repurposed where the formula fails.

Something that really irked me, to start off, was how the quality of the puzzles went from being simple yet still fairly stimulating in the LOTR game, to being comically braindead here.
There is no proper thought being put into any of the actions you're tasked to do. Just switch over to the characters you need for the required action back and forth until this part of the level is done and you can move on.
There's plenty of sections that break up this monotony, but i wouldn't say they're particularly well thought out either. They're visually very exciting, yes, but the auto-runners and the more linear platforming sections don't offer much in terms of actual gameplay experience.
For certain games to be targeted at younger audiences isn't an en excuse for lazy game design, especially if it's the case for one of the more "mature" brands that Lego has licensed.

This isn't the developer's fault, but apparently they couldn't adapt the whole Hobbit trilogy, just sticking to the first 2 movies instead.
When it comes to respecting the source material and turning the serious scenes from the movies into more light-hearted slapstick comedies, i have no complaints there.
Problem is... i get the feeling that they wanted to create a game that was just as long as the LOTR one even with this limitation, which is a respectable goal, but overall it results in a lot of padding, with plenty of levels that go on past their expiration date.

Speaking of padding, i bet this is a baggage that comes with all Lego games in general, but i felt it here a lot more than in the LOTR game: having to redo levels a second time just for the sake of completionism absolutely sucks. I can't tell for sure if this time around there's objectively more unaccessible collectibles on your first playthrough, what i can tell you though is that actually collecting them feels like a chore.

The Hobbit uses the same map from the previous game, with more secondary quests and more exploreable area, which makes perfect sense, as remaking a whole new map with the same locations would just be a waste of time, better expand on what you already have instead.

Not making the whole map accessible from the get-go makes sense too, not making all quests immediately accessible arguably also makes sense depending on who you ask, artificially limiting the amount of quests you can beat until you can freely switch characters in the post-game may be a more questionable choice, as is waiting 'till half the game's runtime to give players access to fast travel, or dividing quests accessibility between time zones that differ in literally nothing how much sunlight there is on screen, gameplay-wise.
Yeah, there's lots of stuff in here that feels tacked on for the sake of complicating things, since this is supposed to be the big western RPG take of the Lego world, with very few of it actually making the experience more complex rather than complicated.

Oh, and to cap it all off: DLC. Yes, they're there, and they're about as underwhelming as you'd expect from a 2014 licensed game. A few extra items, extra characters, extra quests, all stuff that could have been in the base game, but wasn't.

Lego The Hobbit was really disappointing.
