After having done a few things, figuring stuff out as I go, I ran out of things to do. I ran around the map a bunch, not finding what I needed to do next and I got fed up and looked for a guide online. Retracing my steps while I read the guide I got to the furnace room part. I think I ended up turning off the furnace before hitting the patched pipe with a hammer and pumping the bellows.

Where I am in my save I can already see the furnace door is closed, there are bugs on the bellows, and while I still have a hammer and I can look at the "recently fixed pipe" I cannot hit the pipe with the hammer. I think I soft-locked myself by doing things out of order somehow.

Any advice someone might have to fix this would be appreciated. But I get I might just need to replay up to that point.
