HELP Can't play with friends

My friend and i see each other in the join screen and can invite each other through steam but we cannot join each others game even when accepting invite or clicking join It seems like it loads for a second because the screen freezes but it just puts the one trying to join back at the main menu.

You have to start a game first, then exit to the menu and host on multiplayer, your game should then appear for them to join from their multiplayer menu.
