Dev Talk Vol.10 | Seasonal Rank Adjustment
Hey, Rivals!

The first half of Season 1 is reaching its end with the second half set to kick off on February 21, 2025! Get ready to welcome two new Super Heroes to Marvel Rivals—The Thing and Human Torch—along with some major balance adjustments. These updates are expected to shake up the battlefield during the second half of Season 1. After careful observations and consideration, we have concluded that players' ranks during the first half of Season 1 are the best indicator of their competitive skills within the season. So, we will be introducing additional rank reset to better align with the upcoming content and changes!


Season 1 First Half Rank Finalization and Rewards

The first half of Season 1 will conclude on February 21, 2025 at 8:00 (UTC+0), after which all ranks will be locked in. Players at Gold rank or above (season high) will receive a costume reward, and players at Grandmaster rank or above along with the Top 500 will obtain Crest of Honor.

Season 1 Second Half Rank Reset and Rewards

Ranks will be reset when the second half of Season 1 starts on February 21, 2025. Based on your standing at the end of the first half of Season 1, prepare for a drop of four divisions. For example, if you ended the first half of Season 1 at Diamond I, you'll start the second half at Platinum II.

In the second half of the season, we will be rolling out new costume rewards for Gold rank players, along with brand new Crests of Honor. These Crests will recognize players at Grandmaster, Celestial, Eternity, and One Above All (the top 500), each with its own unique design to celebrate your skill!

Additionally, we want to ensure that only players who take part in the current season's competitive mode can earn the corresponding rewards. Starting from the second half of Season 1, players will need to complete at least 10 matches in competitive mode and meet the required conditions to claim their rewards.

Future Seasons and Half Seasons

Going forward, players can expect to kick off the start of each new Season with a drop of six divisions and the start of the second half of each new Season with a drop of four divisions. We will tune this as necessary!

Pretty cool that we now get a second ranked skin this season. I thought we get the Invisible Woman skin at the end of the season.
Cant wait for the new characters.
Hope the balance patches will be what we expect.

Are you going to implement placement matches? Losing four-six ranks per season is going to be rough for people who can't just grind and casual ranked players will suffer. Honestly might not be able to keep playing if I keep getting tossed back and forced to grind up. If there were placement matches it wouldn't be too bad, but grinding plus losing rank midway through is discouraging.

seems like every 6 weeks you lose 4 ranks and every 3 month 6. not that bad. even people who cant play every day have more than enough time to rise their ranks again. I mean I got from Bronze 3 to Gold 3 in 5 hours playtime.

lmao this is a trash way to update rank, reset at each New and mid season lmaoo. this is basically a retention strats to keep playersbase

The ranking system is basically garbage with no real proper rank, 100 points and 3 divisions each simply DOESN'T WORK . Look at dota2 that is how rank is done properly with true mmr, glicko system and so on.

So what's the point of even having individual seasons if ranks are just gonna reset in the middle of a season. We might as well not even have seasons lmao

Lmao those 5 hours I couldve used to grind GM2 to Celestial, but now i gotta go back to Diamond. This is cheeks. Game is starting to cater to the unemployed sweats.

Dropping rank this often is genuinely a horrendous idea and does nothing but annoy players who just had to spent weeks grinding to get out of the lower elo hell. The difference in skill between the average Gold 2 player vs the Average Plat 1 player is huge and quite frankly resetting everyone down is just gonna piss people off. I know with the reset it will be everyone at the same level so its effectively not changed, but Diamond players will be losing their bans, meaning they will have to slog through all of the horrendous characters like wolverine, hulk, luna, cloak and dagger.

This. Placement matches could solve this but these devs want you to grind your life away and buy all the skins. Its a joke

It makes no sense to do this Mid season. I also can't think of any other game/sport that would do this in the MIDDLE of a Season. It is totally unfair to the people who have been grinding and doing their best to be where they are at. Also giving people 11 days notice isn't really fair to the people who have been playing Comp all season long. If you want to implement the idea of a mid season reset , at least tell people in the beginning of the season so they can decide if they want to play Competitive in the first place.
I have been loving the game so far otherwise besides this one decision, and its ok to make mistakes once in awhile , but why Change something that nobody is really asking for ?

Fully agree, people who don't have as much time to sit on the game are the only ones suffering from this. Like regardless if you're trying to hit Plat or Celestial not everyone can put in enough time to get the rank they want before each reset and its pretty discouraging.
They dont care, The entire point of this change was to make players play the game more and end up spending more time on the game which in turn, makes NetEase more money. Very predatory
