Just sad

It is sad. I just checked out the list of PC games released like Depth in 2014 and it seems it was a classic year for games. Many still have a footprint today although I'm not sure what the player numbers would be for Five Nights at Freddie's and Call of Duty Advanced Warfare now. And Civilisation -Beyond Earth was a rushed, poorly designed rip off and an insult to Secrets of Alpha Centauri which remains awesome to this day.

Digital distribution has changed things. Once games had a burst of life on first release, an after life on budget release, and then were gone forever.

Uniquely two out of three of the top games in the most played played list on Steam are 2024 releases but one of those involves clicking a banana to make more bananas ? More than half of the rest of the list are at least three years old and a couple are at least a decade. But the list today will be different from 2014 when Depth was first released.

But the reality is that FPSs tend to have a shorter life than other genres because their players are always looking for the next big thing - there are exceptions - Doom and Team Fortress 2 for example.

An online FPS that survives a decade is an exception rather than the rule. And if Depth is dying it is sad because a decade on it still looks gorgeous and it can still supply the best edge of the seat gaming experiences.

STEVE heading backing to the boat, both sharks and divers on low but closely matched lives is still one of the most intense experiences in gaming.

And to the Depth devs. Ten year anniversary ! (It's big and it's round - Dogbert). The game may be dying but why not give it a Viking funeral ? At least put a "10" on the anniversary cakes and banners.

Also if there were unused shark and diver skins still on a drive somewhere why not give them away as gifts to players who log in for the Depth anniversary ? At 100 players it's not going to be the biggest giveaway in internet history.

But if I was a publicist for a company that currently had one live game I'd go all out in publicising the 10th anniversary. Many people who played the game will not have played it in its present form and may not realise just how good it is now.

Low shot odds but it might even lead to big revival. Niche is now the meme babes, niche is now the meme.

Jesse, what the ♥♥♥♥ are you talking about?

Is English not your primary ? Have you tried Google translate ?

I'll try to keep the language simple for you.

1) It is truly sad if Depth is dying because it's still a great game.
2) Most FPSs don't last as long as Depth has.
3)It is Depth's tenth birthday soon. I encouraged the developers to make it a special event.

Simples.

I understood the main gist of what you said, it's just all the other random stuff you threw in makes it hard to follow along with what you're trying to say and it makes your comment seem super ramble-y

"And to the Depth devs. Ten year anniversary ! (It's big and it's round - Dogbert)."

Like what did you even mean by this?

"Low shot odds but it might even lead to big revival. Niche is now the meme babes, niche is now the meme."

I don't even know man. I'd think twice before posting something like this.
The quote is from the Dilbert cartoon. The humour is that there is nothing particularly special numerically about a number divisible by ten but we attribute it value.

That niche is the current future of gaming was published in this month's PC gamer so it's not a novel opinion.

See I never watched Dilbert before so I had no clue that was a reference to something.

And I know what "niche" is. I just think "niche is now the meme" is such an odd thing to say.

Again it was humour mixed with truth. For the moment the zeitgeist in gaming is niche games - Dave the Diver et al.
