The game servers are not being shut down, just the addition of new content - though we are looking into community content right now.
Honestly, that's so many years away I don't think we need to plan for it. The servers aren't going down anytime soon.
Going Free To Play just isn't an option. How do fund all the work required to go Free To Play? And how do you fund the servers needed for host Free To Play players? You can always play Depth against bots, and the server binaries for Depth are public (released many years ago), so you can host game servers if you want.
Depth is gonna be playable for a loooonnnng time
