Online takes work, also money for dedicated servers. Its why most online games have paid sources like dlc or subscriptions. Even private servers for RPGs for example. Someone is paying to keep that server up. Its also why dead online games have to use hamachi and lan setups to connect directly to your buddy. Without all that there's no real incentive to make a game coop without a dedicated server. And even a dedicated server like, for example the EU servers in eye cybermancy. Someone's keeping that up, and I've seen it go down for a while.
This is why so many games from hrot to darkwood to even ones that had online like dungeon siege, have no current servers. Someone's gotta keep it up, and that takes work and dedication.
