Did you do it with administrator access? Probably needs that. This is actually the official Interplay fix that was mentioned in a previous post by c0Zm1c.

I don't understand why on Earth or beyond anyone would want to play this game without FSO.

While FSO is great, I totally understand people who want to click 'play' and get going without any fuss. HD graphics and stuff can come later.

Click on FS2.REG

It'll ask if you want to add it to the registry. Click yes. Play Freespace 2.

There is no FS2.REG. I also did a search on that file from freespace 2 folder and it found nothing. Also, i don't install games on C: drive.

The mods are worth it, if you enjoy the game then I am sure you will enjoy the updated graphics and the sporadic online community FSO has to offer. They were helping us out before Steam and Interplay even bothered replying. Hardly worth calling them turds in my opinion.

If you don't have FS2.REG then you are missing the update from Steam.

True, but I can understand every bit of frustration about having bought a game that doesn't just work. In general, the mod should improve the game, not be essential for it to function. Also, FSO and MediaVPs aren't always the easiest mods to dl & install. Some people like to play without fuss.
